Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Somme, who discusses the creative process and inspiration behind her debut, self-titled EP.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Somme: It sort of just came to me I guess. I started playing guitar when I was around 6 and that turned into drums around 12 and bass when I was 14.
Review Fix: What are your influences?
Somme: I love Robyn. Lorde, PVRIS, Florence and the Machine.
Review Fix: What makes “Tell Me special?
Somme: Tell Me is a super personal song about dealing with a loved one with an addiction. I really had to let my walls down when I wrote that one but I think it was definitely worth it.
Review Fix: What makes your brand of music special?
Somme: I think my music is unique because the songs have a singer/songwriter feel but they’re heavily produced pop songs.
Review Fix: Why do you think people should enjoy it?
Somme: Because it’s honest and real and it’s not trying to be something it isn’t.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Somme: Because of how few women get recognition in the music industry, I feel this pressure that I have something to prove. That I can produce, write, and put a show together on my own. I’m lucky enough to know a lot of female musicians who do the same, however in the industry, in general, we’re few and far between because girls are made to feel like they need a mans hand to complete something of value. Of course, I want everyone that listens to my music to like it, but I would especially love for girls to hear it and be inspired to do anything they’re afraid to do.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2018?
Somme: Write a lot more music and play a lot more shows.
