Review Fix Exclusive: Inside ‘Godly Corp’

Review Fix chats with ‘Godly Corp’ developer Mariusz Świątczak who discusses the creative process behind the Lovecraft-inspired game and the IndieGoGo behind it.

Review Fix: Why is the work of Lovecraft special to you?

Mariusz Świątczak: His ideas and the concept of the weird universe is really unique and can fuel your imagination. His books inspired great games like “Alone in the Dark” and “Call Of Cthulhu.” And of course Cthulhu became a big part of pop culture and its influence can be found in many movies, games, comics etc

Review Fix: Why does this game matter?

Świątczak: For the video game landscape, Godly Corp might be a breath of fresh air in a sense that gameplay is pretty unique and every level is really a something new and a player will be bombarded with twists and surprises throughout the whole game. But for our studio, Godly Corp is the first step in the game dev stage. Depending on how well the game does, we might continue making the games. We already have some detailed concept for two games and both have some assets and mechanics ready. And our next game would probably be a little more ‘tamed’ with gameplay and presentation as we are thinking about turn-based games.

Review Fix: What’s the next plan if this Crowd-Sourcing plan fails?

Świątczak: Godly Corp is partially done, at least for PC. There are 11 levels already done and polished and another 9 that are still in progress. During the beta testing phase, testers suggested doing a VR version- that’s one of the main reasons why we are doing the IndieGoGo campaign. If the crowdfunding fails then we will have release game only for PC and it will have fewer levels and probably will be less polished due to the shorter development time.

Review Fix: Any thoughts on releasing this one on consoles?

Świątczak: So far we are planning to release Godly Corp on PC and, if the campaign goes well, for VR devices. But so far we haven’t thought about making a port for consoles although if enough people will be interested in the game we might consider that.

Review Fix: What have people told you they liked about the game so far?

Świątczak: The most intriguing thing for most testers and people who played the demo was that every level is completely different and there are some ‘twists’ and surprises in the middle of the level that gives a nice spin to the gameplay. Hectic gameplay mixed with multitasking and hilarious presentation made a big impression on some players. And the tentacle mechanic is pretty interesting for obvious reasons.

Review Fix: How would you describe this game to someone who has never seen it?

ŚwiÄ…tczak: You control a tentacle arm and take care of planets that are on your desk in your cubicle office. Each day brings a completely new challenge such as fighting off bug infestation, building an IKEA like planet in zero gravity or piloting drone around the office to collect crystals for the planet. Hilarious presentation, twists, tentacle, ridiculous tasks – Godly Corp has it all.

Review Fix: What do you think is the best part of this game?

Świątczak: It’s hard to pick just one thing but many players really like the tentacle and how it behaves in the game. If you get used to controls it feels really rewarding to perform complicated tasks, especially when players get much more skilled in controlling the tentacle at each level. Another thing that makes Godly Corp such a fun game is that each level is something completely and there is absolutely no way for a new player to predict what will you be doing in next level

Review Fix: What do you think needs the most work?

ÅšwiÄ…tczak: We still have a lot of polishing and balancing to do. A lot of people gave us very valuable feedback which will help us make Godly Corp even better. If IndieGoGo campaign will allow us to extend development time we will have to modify the game a little to make a port for VR.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Świątczak: We recently started an IndieGoGo campaign for Godly Corp on IndieGoGo! If anyone would like to check out the game and support us here is the link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/godly-corp-cthulhu-behind-the-desk-vr-pc#/
Your help is highly appreciated and you can get your name in the credits or even be in the game!
