Incredibles 2: Crisis in Mid-Life! And Other Stories #1 Review: Fun

“The Incredibles” is one of “Pixar’s” greatest movies. The fanbase for this movie is insane and there are tons of merchandise. With the release of “Incredibles 2” the hype for the franchise is rekindled and Dark Horse has thrown its hat in the ring with the first issue of “Incredibles 2: Crisis in Mid-Life! And Other Stories” and it’s a neat little short story anthology.

The first story, “Crisis in Mid-Life! Part 1” by Christos Gage and art by Gurihiru, tells the story of when Mr. Incredible dedicated a nuclear submarine and had to catch it when a piece of scaffold held it up broke off. Fast-forward to today and Mr. Incredible did the same, but it was too heavy for him. Turns out the new submarine was three tons lighter than the one he caught years ago and the reason for him not being strong enough is age. This causes him to go through a mid-life crisis. This is actually a light-hearted story where we see how Mr. Incredible deals with his crises. It does its job of wanted the reader wanting to see more. The art is really “Disney” cartoony to the point where it looks like modern “Disney Channel” cartoons.

“Bedtime Story Part 1” by Christos Gage and art by J Bone, is about Mr. Incredible telling Jack Jack a bedtime story about how he saved all the supers. Sadly, it ends abruptly because this comic is really short (four pages.) Also, Dash and Violet tell him that the story he told is fake and he was going to tell the real story before the comic ended. Either this is a clever way to make the reader want to know more of the story or just executives being greedy. The artwork is lower quality than the previous comic. It’s blocky and the colors look watered down.

“A Relaxing Day at the Park” by Landry Q. Walker and art by Emilio Urbano and Andrea Greppi, is the final story. Mr. Incredible takes Jack Jack to a park and Jack-Jack fights off what he thinks is a villain trying to harm another baby but it’s some costumed character. That’s the entire comic since this is another four-page comic. It’s a fine short story that has Jack Jack being Jack-Jack. It’s colorful, packs a lot of action and in a way does tell a full, interesting story in just four pages.

The first issue of “Incredibles 2: Crisis in Mid-Life! And Other Stories” has three great stories despite two of them being short. The art for each of them do range in quality, but they are still worth looking into.
