Matt Massey: ‘Built ‘Review: All Energy

From the moment the song begins, and you hear Matt Massey’s voice, you know you’re in for a treat. And the first verse takes off like a rocket, all explosive energy. Massey’s vocal delivery sounds like a mixture of Grunge-Rock icon, Eddie Vedder, the frontman of Pearl Jam and Metallica’s James Hetfield.

The song features heavily distorted, growling guitar-riffs that will make anyone bang their head. As well as a couple of excellent thirty-second guitar solos that shows off Massey’s musical chops.

Thematically, the song is inspiring. It talks about Massey’s struggles with his mental health, as well as the general difficulties of everyday life. It’s an empowering song that someone can listen to on a bad day that will help them push through their hardships and kick that day right in the teeth.

“Built,” is a follow-up single to his debut solo album, “Dear Today.” After spending most of his musical career in bands that stifled his creative energy, Massey struck out on his own to create music that he would want to listen to, giving him a more profound sense of fulfillment knowing that the song is entirely his. From the vocals to every instrument featured in the track, Massey performed, recorded, and mixed it all.

With such a lively and spirited sound, anyone who enjoys heavy alternative music can find something to love in “Built.” It’s powerful, it’s angry, it’s motivating, and it’s beautiful at the same time. Musicians like Massey are part of the reason why so many people fall in love with hard-rock at a young age and carry it with them for their entire lives.
