Review Fix: Who is Carter Sampson?
Carter Sampson: I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, OK and am a proud member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. I am a singer, songwriter, guitar player, artist and the founder and director of the Rock and Roll Camp for Girls OKC, a non profit that empowers girls and women through music.Â
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Sampson: My dad played guitar in bands when I was growing up, my mom still sings in the church choir and my maternal grandmother was a piano teacher so music was a very big part of my childhood. I went to Miss Hickman’s School of Music for preschool and learned there at the tender age of 4 that I really liked to be on stage performing. Going into middle school I auditioned for the school choir and didn’t make the cut so I picked up the guitar and started a band.Â
Review Fix: What makes this single special to you?
Sampson: “Peaches†is an ode to my childhood and easier/better times, at least a time when I had very little to worry about. My grandparents lived in Duncan (a small town in south central Oklahoma) and I spent every weekend and summer there growing up.Â
Review Fix: How was it written?
Sampson: I wrote this song in a friend’s backyard in Lyons, CO. Something about being in that beautiful and peaceful space got me thinking about how good it was just to simply swing on a porch swing with my grandmother. I wrote it on my 1960s Harmony tenor guitar.Â
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?
Sampson: Modern middle American folk music that is a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll.Â
Review Fix: Why does Colorado matter?
Sampson: My parents moved to Aspen, CO after they graduated college in the late 1970s. I was made in CO and just before I was born they moved back to Oklahoma. CO has always been a home away from home or second home state to me. I tour there and play there a lot, there’s something about the place and the friends that I have there that is really good for my soul.Â
Review Fix: What are your goals for this track?
Sampson: I have already had people tell me that they really relate to this song and I love hearing that one of my songs has drawn emotion in someone. I think that is ultimately the goal however it would be nice to buy a house.
Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered in a few years?
Sampson: We just finished a music video for Peaches and used some old family footage mixed in with shots of me and my band. Some of the old 8 mm film is of my family before I was born. I’m happy to be able to share and preserve a little of my family and roots in song and video.Â
Review Fix: What’s next?
Sampson: Touring as usual and starting to write songs for a new record. I am starting to play more full band shows and I’m having a great time playing with them, so hopefully more full band touring.Â
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Sampson: I’m really excited and proud to work with Tulsa based Horton Records on this album. They are a non-profit record label that is helping to bring attention to the really good music that is coming out of Oklahoma right now.Â
