Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Nick Ferrio, who lets us know all about his process, goals and upcoming shows.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Nick Ferrio: I grew up in a small town and music was my outlet, my way of asserting my identity. I started exploring songwriting and guitar playing when I was maybe 12. Started my first band around that time too. My family wasn’t a big music family, but they loved listening to albums. Lots of Beatles. Lots of Nirvana too.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Ferrio: I tend to fill note books with scraps of lyrics and ideas, and then pour over them searching for melody with a guitar. Once I’ve got something, I tend to wander around and sing the melody to myself, often recording them as voice memos on my phone. After that I begin the recording process in my studio and whittle away until it’s ready.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Ferrio: I feel like as a songwriter, I’m constantly searching for something, and if I find it I’ll do my best to let you know. Inspiration comes from all sorts of experiences. This is a hard question to answer! Lately, I’ve been inspired by exploring my home territory of Nogojiwanong (Peterborough) and spending time learning about the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg people who live here and whose ancestral home is here.
Review Fix: What makes “How Will I Know“Â a special track?
Ferrio: It’s a philosophical song that steps back and looks at the act of making music in today’s changing musical landscape. I ask myself the question is music still worth something? Is it still important. The answer I come to in the song (spoiler alert!) is yes, music has the power to transform, to give meaning, to create connection, to make change.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Ferrio: I’m a singer-songwriter who likes to rock and roll. People say I sound a bit like Joel Plaskett. Lyrics are really important to me, but I also love melody. I think it’s thoughtful power-pop music.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Ferrio: It’s a pretty rollicking affair live! Lately it’s been a three-piece band, bass, drums and electric guitars with voice. It’s a really fun show!
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2018?
Ferrio: I released a 10″ record called Have a Nice Day on Sept 28, 2018 and will be touring throughout the fall and winter.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Ferrio: We’re touring in Ontario and Quebec soon – here’s the dates:
