Review Fix chats with Cinders’ Jordan Zabriskie, who discusses the band’s origin, goals, creative process and standout track, “100 Foxes.â€
Review Fix: How did this project come together?Â
Jordan Zabriskie: Cinders was started out a long time ago without us realizing it. Most of the members were friends during high school and even played music together at that time. Being in and out of other bands and recognizing that all of us have a talent for creating art, we left our other groups to focus on one that we knew we could all be passionate about together. Long story short, we were and are friends first and a band second.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?Â
Zabriskie: It only takes one of us to get the process moving. With 6 members, at least 1 of us is always working on something new. Inspiration for a lot of the songs on Looking Forward to Looking Back came from personal experience or feelings. We feel like we never really grew up and so all of us are still kids and a lot of our songs on the new record talk about that and those struggles from a few different perspectives. That is partially where the idea for the album title came from.
Review Fix:Â What’s your standout song?Â
Zabriskie: As of right now it would our latest single entitled 100 Foxes. It has a more group vocals and more intense lyrics than our previous songs released. It is a song that is meant to be played live. NPR’s Bob Boilen said this about, “I am a huge fan of songs that have songs inside of songs, and this song did that so well.”
Review Fix: How was it written?Â
Zabriskie: Like all of our songs it was written as a group. A lot of the inspiration for the lyrics actually came from the Bible story of Samson. He had set 300 foxes’ tails on fire and sent them through his enemy’s fields. The kind of imagery shown in that was something we wanted to create in this song as well.Â
Review Fix:Â What are your goals for the rest of 2018?Â
Zabriskie: With the release of our new record Looking Forward to Looking Back, we are going to be touring the Western United States! We can’t wait to be back on the road again going to some of our favorite cities, and playing for so many of our favorite people! We have put everything into this album and can’t wait for everyone to hear it. Our goal is that it will surpass our first record’s stats during its first few months of being released!
Review Fix:Â How do you want your music to affect people?Â
Zabriskie: Our hope is that we can be a positive influence in the lives of our fans. We don’t have control over whether bad things happen in life or not. But we do have control over our attitude and how we decide to handle them. These songs on the new record are all very personal and deal with overcoming hard times and searching out those good vibes. Positivity is a huge thing and we want to share more of it.
Review Fix:Â What’s next?
Zabriskie: Brand new album Looking Forward to Looking Back comes out everywhere September 29th! Make sure to follow on Spotify and Apple Music so that you can hear it first.
