Hells Kitchen: Rookies vs. Veterans Episode 8 Recap

This episode started with Marino bringing out a screen that showed each chef what they looked like when they were kids. On top of that, it also showed each sous chef, Marino and even Ramsay when they were young. As always when someone sees a really old picture of themselves, the reaction is “oh, that hair/clothes etc.” This whole scenery was to set up Ramsay’s daughter’s, Matilda, sweet sixteen.

The day’s challenge was for the chefs to cook a dish that Matilda would choose to be served at her sweet sixteen. Of course, the team with the most points won the challenge. In this case, the Blue destroyed the Red 4-2 even though there weren’t any disastrous dishes. The Blue’s reward was a day in a Malibu mansion and ice cream from “Van Leeuwen” ice cream truck. The only interesting part was Ariel using little swan floating toys as Ramsay yelling at other chefs.

Meanwhile, the Red had to prepare for the sweet sixteen by making personal four-layer cakes for every guest, mobile photobooth, tissue paper flowers and bouquets. Obviously, asking a bunch of guys to do arts and crafts will turn into them not knowing what to do even with instructions. On a sad note, Bret felt like he was having a heart attack. The EMT said he was fine for now but it was up to him if he wanted to continue. After signing a waiver, he did. Well, his drive to win is admirable.

At the sweet sixteen, things didn’t go so well for the Blue. It started with Kanae slicing tuna that looked like it was chewed. Later, Roe, the “Steak Queen,” undercooked an NY strip. She would then bring up another rare NY strip, causing Ramsay to bring the entire Blue Team to the pantry because he didn’t want to “*BLEEP* swear in front of the *BLEEP* kids.” A little too late for that Ramsay. As with the meat, Mia on fish also had a poor service. First, it was not enough batter on a fish, then it was an undercooked fish. A flare-up and a raw fish for Matilda’s table was enough to kick out the Blue Team.

The only mistakes from the Red were Bret burning a few fries and Trev putting too much garlic in the spinach. This is about as perfect a service as you can get in “Hell’s Kitchen.” Enjoy it while it lasts.

The Blue nominated Roe and Mia with Roe getting eliminated.

For someone who calls herself the “Steak Queen” she sure made plenty of mistakes on the meat station. Roe is yet another veteran who should have performed better but proved why she got eliminated in the first place. At this juncture, it seems like a rookie will win this season with the only veteran who stands any chance is maybe Bret. This episode is a lot better than the previous episodes, showing that this season is improving but it’s still not a memorable season.
