Review Fix chats with On Better Term’s Alex Rincon, who discusses the band’s origin and plans for the future.
Review Fix: How did the project start?
Alex Rincon: We got started when vocalist Andrew brought his lyrics to guitarist Alex, who began writing songs while Andrew was still in college. We got together to write and record when we could and once Andrew graduated we added a bassist and drummer and started writing even more and practicing a set. We’ve been playing shows and releasing music ever since. Our collective love for music and similar bands, as well the desire to express ourselves outside daily life really made us want to start this project.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Rincon: We view the relationship like cogs in a machine. It takes all the pieces working together to make one product. For example, when we wrote our new record Waves, Alex would write some riffs on his own and show it to the rest of the group. We’d jam it and start to build around it, if we dug it then we’d continue to develop the song as well as start writing lyrics for it, if we all don’t enjoy the song we’re creating, then we scratch it and try again
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Rincon: For us it would have to be the single off our record Peaks. This song was actually the first song we wrote for the record under our current lineup. Josh and Alex (guitarist) were regularly getting together when we first started writing Waves, and we fleshed out the basic song structure for Peaks. We actually didn’t like it at first, and wasn’t until a few months later in the writing process that we decided to revisit what Josh and Alex had written. We jammed it at a practice and it felt like it was going somewhere musically and lyrically, so we finished it. Once we got into the studio to record the song, that’s when it really came together. It’s a great song that showcases what OBT is all about—both lyrically and instrumentally.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2019?
Rincon: We don’t have a specific plan or idea in mind. We’re just making music and want to tour as much as possible, wherever that leads us.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Rincon: We really want our first time listeners to remember that it made them think about something, enough to where they would want to listen again.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Rincon: The plan for 2019 is to continue touring in support of the new record, as well as continue to write new music.
