There is a strange ethereal charm that can be felt in sadness. With the hip-hop renaissance, the most mainstream form of this expression is found mostly in the emerging “emo rap” genre. Painted into Things challenges this aesthetic with their own dreamy ambiance in Something Beautiful Won’t Come Out.
Something Beautiful Won’t Come Out is a track that lays out a very soft rock style for its melancholy lyrics. With lines such as “clouds are a signal you’re in too deep” and “wait inside your mind, find someplace to hide” embody feelings of isolation and loneliness. These are delivered with a feather-soft vocal performance that evokes a soothing feeling. These lines and the entire mood of the song come to a head during the chorus, which is the liberal use of the tracks title.
These elements, when put together, are far less impressive than they are when taken separately. There is a feeling of incompleteness to the track and it gives off more of a B-side from a Death Cab for Cutie album feeling than something all its own.
A somber yet unsure track, Something Beautiful Won’t Come Out is a genuinely interesting listen. Its dreamy aesthetic and emotional lyrical presence has the potential to entice. After the first listen, however, its rough nature and lack of weight in the lyrics and instrumentals will become more apparent. Because of this, Something Beautiful Won’t Come Out is again, laden with potential and will thrive the most with those who appreciate music with a bevy of flavor and layers.
