Review Fix chats with In The City’s Ashley Jane, who discusses the group’s new single, Every Single Day.â€
About In The City:
Singer-songwriter and documentary story producer Jane was with a non-profit that empowered kids through music. Composer Wientzek worked in the studio where they were recording. Their backgrounds were diverse — she grew up twirling in a backyard skating rink as Joni Mitchell, the Rankin Family, Fleetwood Mac and Shania Twain blasted from outdoor speakers housed in Tupperware to thwart squirrels; he absorbed the sounds of everyone from Bon Jovi and Limp Bizkit to Radiohead and even Backstreet Boys (“I really enjoyed the production and the harmonies,” he swears). Ultimately, their differences proved to be great strengths.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Ashley Jane: Music has been a life long passion for both of us that started at an early age. We started writing together when we met at a studio in Toronto. After realizing that we had a musical chemistry we decided to form a band.
Review Fix: What makes you unique?
Jane: We both have unique backgrounds that contribute to our sound. Timon has a music production and film composing background and Ashley used to produce and direct documentary television. As a result our songs have are story driven and often sound cinematic.
Review Fix: What are your goals in music?
Jane: We want to continue to create music about the big life moments that happen to us and the people we know. We hope that our songs continue to resonate with listeners.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Jane: Folk-pop that is story driven and cinematic.
Review Fix: Why do your tunes matter?
Jane: We think that as long as the music an artist creates means something to them and their listeners then that music will always matter.
Review Fix: How was “Every Single Day” written?
Jane: We write most of our songs in Timon’s home studio in Toronto. With this song the chorus came first and then we wrote the verses. We tried many times to find the proper instrumentation and arrangement for this song before deciding to keep it paired down to piano, strings and lap-steel.
Review Fix: What makes it special?
Jane: This was the first time we recorded with a string quartet. That felt pretty special to us !
Review Fix: What’s next?
Jane: We’re are writing new material and working as composers/songwriters for film/tv.
