Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter/bassist//guitarist Owen Marchildon, who discusses his origin in music, creative process and new single, ‘One Night Stand.’
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Owen Marchildon: I began playing bass in the critically lauded, now defunct Math Rock Quartet, From Fiction. While playing in From Fiction I was encouraged to pursue my own projects. I had never really played the guitar before with songwriting as a focus. I quickly realized how fun and creatively rewarding it was.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Marchildon: It usually always starts with the lyrics, followed by patient repetition. Then there’s a feeling that maybe the idea is slightly out of reach. That’s probably the most important feeling. For me, anyways. That feeling of uncertainty. It pushes me towards completion because I can’t stand myself when things are left unfinished.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Marchildon: Reading a well-written detective novel. People are like puzzles and I like writing about people. Also, my friend Paul Shepherd. He inspires me to push the envelope.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sounds someone who has never heard you?
Marchildon: Well, this particular project I would describe as a “drone driven guitar affair with swirling keyboards and comically skewed lyrics.” But if I wanted to be specific, I’d say it’s “the sound of not giving a fuck but caring so much.”
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Marchildon: I would say my live shows are hyperactive and my studio work is more methodical.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?
Marchildon: With “One Night Stand” Shepherd and I wanted to highlight the awkwardness and lack of spontaneity that can happen with that particular situation. How two strangers who are trying to achieve intimacy, who are possibly searching for companionship, are sometimes left even further apart from each other.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2019?
Marchildon: I just bought a new drum machine. Going to spend some time getting to know it.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Marchildon: I’m going to be releasing some singles early next year. Some tracks that have been lying around too long. Songs me and Shepherd recorded live off the floor at his studio. Also, I have a Rock n Roll band called Purple Hill. Finishing up a new recording that we hope to release later next year.
