Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Sam Weber, who discusses his latest single, as well as his goals for the future.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Sam Weber: My dad was really musical and he instilled a passion for it in my brother and me. More-so than being a technically outstanding he had a deep joy for playing and used music as a way to reach for something beautiful. His approach has stayed with me.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Weber: My creative process is to avoid procedure. Either in the moment in a song, or in conceptualizing an idea, the more I can respond in accordance with how I feel in the moment the more compelling the results seem to be.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Weber: Anyone who really believes in what they’re doing. They remind me to do the same.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Weber: I’d hope the music sounds spontaneous and not too thought out. It’s just music it’s for everyone and I like when it sounds natural.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Weber: With this upcoming record both experiences are similar because we recorded as a big band live in the studio, but we tend to only play as a 3 or 4 piece live so we rearrange the music to sound best with a smaller ensemble. The studio recording feels like the initial compass heading for everything that comes after… rather than trying to recreate the recording, a lot of the times I think we get closer to the heart of the song when we can push it forward in the live domain, building on the feeling of the recording
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?
Weber: “It’s All Happening†I wrote in my friend Tyler’s garage in Glassell Park. I’d been experimenting with this stereo guitar setup and the song started as this syncopated guitar part that flickers left to right. It really made me feel like the world was moving and buzzing; like things were happening. It’s all happening is a mantra coined by my friend Terra Lightfoot that we started saying to each other all the time as a joke, it sort of means everything, all of it, is unfolding as it should. The lyrics in the song refer to the narrator persevering in the face of adversity and accepting that everything is in motion and happening as it should.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2019?
Weber: I want to tour more. We tour a lot so I really just want to keep doing that. It would be cool to open shows for more people too.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Weber: We’re going to put out this record and play the music for people. We’ve been sitting on it for a while so I’m really glad to share it with people soon. All dates and tickets will be on the website as they come available www.samweber.me
