Drunk and alone on New Year’s Eve, they decide to make love… It wasn’t a good idea.
Childhood friends and next-door neighbors Phillie McDougal and Barbie Bradley are both soon to be 25, and they are both still virgins (well, she is… him?) Alone and having had too much to drink, the two best-friends-forever take their relationship to the next level (even though he is gay). As far as Barbie’s mother is concerned, it wasn’t a good idea.
The play is based on characters featured in Doug DeVita‘s award winning play, Phillie’s Trilogy.
Review Fix: What was your inspiration behind this project?
Doug DeVita: Repetition was inspired by the characters I’ve created in my full length play Phillie’s Trilogy. It’s a back-story dramatizing events that are talked about but not seen in the full play.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
DeVita: As I have joked before, I am fueled by martinis and rage. And while that’s not exactly the truth, I have many stories that I just have to tell, and that energy finds its way to the page, often between 3:00 and 6:00 in the morning, when I have to stop and walk the dog, which ENRAGES me (no, I love my dog, I’m besotted with him, but having to stop right when I’m on fire…)
Review Fix: What did you learn/are learning about yourself through this process/production?
DeVita: I am not done with these characters. Not by a long shot!
Review Fix: What are your ultimate goals for this for the future?
DeVita: I think at this point I may turn Phillie’s Trilogy into The Phillie Files, a sort of saga that’s performed in either a marathon session, over a period of two nights, or better yet, a mini-series! HAHAHAHAHA Amazon, Netflix, HBO, Showtime, PBS… are you reading this?
Review Fix: What’s next?
DeVita: I am working very hard to make 2020 the year my work gets produced by someone other than myself. Again, anyone interested in working with a rapidly aging, slowly emerging playwright reading this and want to speed up my transition from caterpillar to butterfly, LMK. SOON! It’s already JANUARY!!!
