Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter DAYVID, who discusses his origin in music, new single and goals for the future.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
DAYVID: My family wasn’t very interested in music, and we very rarely played it at home. But I developed an interest when my friends introduced me to popular music in elementary school. I joined the choir. As I realized that I have a bit of talent for singing, I became much more interested. Early in my teenage years I began to listen more carefully to learn how music is constructed. At age 15 I began commuting to Los Angeles to take voice lessons, and I started writing songs at home. Over time, I progressed to work with professional songwriters to learn that craft. I wrote and recorded my first songs at age 16, and by age 18 I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my goal to become a successful singer, songwriter, and performer. It has been a long windy road with ups and downs, but I am happy with where I am now.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
DAYVID: I almost always bring a title and concept to writing sessions. Sometimes I have also worked out parts of the melody and lyrics. But I always work with accomplished collaborators, and we build a complete song together. Collaboration creates a better song than any of us could write alone.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
DAYVID: My life and the lives of those around me.
Review Fix: What does music mean to you?
DAYVID: Music speaks to our deepest sentiments. It has always spoken to me, and I hope to speak to others.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
DAYVID: The studio provides all the time needed to make a song as perfect as possible. In my live shows the band enhances the production by making it bigger and bolder. I integrate energy from the audience with my own energy expressing how I feel at that moment.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?
DAYVID: This song emerged as I reflected on a low period when I was dealing with some difficult relationships. I used “spinning bottles†as a metaphor for how I was trapped in a destructive cycle. I learned that there are situations I can’t control (they are “outta my handsâ€) so it is pointless to keep thinking about things I should let go.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
DAYVID: I want to bring my music to a large audience by touring and getting more radio play.
Review Fix: What’s next?
DAYVID: The videos for “Spinning Bottles†and “Same Old Feeling.â€
