Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Destiny Malibu, who lets us know all about her origins in music and new single, “Lo Siento.â€
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Destiny Malibu: I was immersed into music at a very young age because my mother was a successful artist in a Spanish girl group “Pares y Nones†and later renamed “Rio Lentoâ€. Some of my earliest memories are sitting in the studio absorbing all the creative energy.
I naturally fell in love with music and recorded on the mic for the first time at the age of 5. I started playing guitar at about 9 years old and wrote my very first song called “A million kisses†that same year. I was hooked. I knew writing and performing was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Malibu: Every song comes together in a different way. Sometimes I wake up with a melody in my head and record it as a voice memo in my phone to develop later, sometimes I write a chord progression on the guitar or piano first, sometimes I work with producers and topline, I truly enjoy creating art in a variety of facets.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Malibu: People. Experiences. Memories. Love. Pain. Artists I admire. Nature. My faith. My family. My source for inspiration is endless. I truly am fascinated by the human experience of life and feel so blessed that I am in a career that gets to reflect those stories in a musical manner.
Review Fix: What does music mean to you?
Malibu: My life would be black & white without music. It gives my entire life color and I am so in love with getting the opportunity to create an entire world with my amazing team that people can step into with every song, music video, and performance. It never ceases to amaze me that a single musical chord can hit a nerve to a specific emotion in our bodies. The reaction emotion has to sound, pressure, lyrics, melody, time signature, instrument choices, and note choices will forever be a lifelong fascination for me. The power that music has to heal, inspire, and soothe is something that I will never take for granted.
Review Fix: What makes this project special?
“Lo Siento†is my first ever official Bilingual release and it’s extremely special to me since my mother’s roots are in Spanish music. Being half Latina and half Swedish, it’s an incredible honor to get to reflect both of my backgrounds equally. This song is about going out to a party, club or event and unexpectedly meeting ‘the one’. Since my parents met unexpectedly dancing at the famous “Avalon†in Hollywood, this story setting is close to my heart.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you before?
I am a primarily a Pop artist with a heavy tendency toward soul/r&b and overall genre-blending. I am in love with Pop because I am in love with hook writing, but every single one of my songs has a slightly different influence. You can find sprinkles of r&b, rap, soul, EDM, country, and rock in all my music.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Studio sessions and live shows both hold a special place in my heart but there is something truly incredible about feeling all of the energy from the crowd during a concert. I literally share my whole soul with the audience during a show and when I see people singing along, smiling, dancing, it really is a magical experience full of pure bliss. I have been told by many angels that seeing the live performances in person is a whole next level experience for them as it is for me, too.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
My schedule in 2020 is full of upcoming releases, performances and collaborations this year.  I am particularly overjoyed to get on the road with my new tour bus and share the beautiful artwork that was created by the vision of our team effort.  The design includes wings to reflect that my fans that are “angels†and a picture of me on Malibu beach with my guitar so that I can always take a piece of home with me wherever I go.
Review Fix: What’s next?
I have 27 songs scheduled for release in 2020.
“Lo Siento†February 28th followed by more songs and music videos! Stay tuned for the fun!
Review Fix: Anything else you would like to add?
I am a big mental health advocate and thoroughly appreciate the opportunity to speak to students about their issues.  And if you or someone you know is struggling! Let’s talk.  As part of my visits to schools, I frequently do Q&A sessions with students in their classrooms about mental health.  I believe prevention can begin with a willingness to talk and listen.  I look forward to meeting you all soon.
