Review Fix chats with Bad Actress’ Tommy B, who discusses the band’s origin and goals for 2020.
Review Fix: How did the project start?
Tommy B: Well it started out as our lead guitarist (Chick) and our drummer (Lui) playing something different from their at the time main project “Civil Punk.†Then they came to me for a second guitarist position because my old band had just ended. I wasn’t very keen from the start if I recall correctly. I was just looking forward to being a bed room guitarist again but didn’t work out that way. Thankfully!
Then I took along a bass player with me from my old band. He was in the band for about a year and a half or so but we eventually went our separate ways. Then Chick and Lui got their older brother Vinnie into the fold and it all just kind of fitted into place. Then once our first bass player left we went to work finding a replacement. We invited along Bobbin to a jam. He had seen us at one of our early gigs in a local pub. I believe he liked what he heard haha. So once we got him we threw him straight into the deep end with an hour long set at a venue about 100 miles away from home. He did a great job considering he never considered playing bass until joining up with us. Now we have our ideal line up. Everyone gets along and we all have a good laugh. What more can you ask for?
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Tommy B: It usually stems from a simple riff or lyrical theme and we just kind of build on it from there. It’s usually me or Chick that brings the idea for songs to the group and we all write our own parts to go with it.
When it comes to working in the studio it can be very different. We like to go in to it knowing our material but we end up scrapping stuff, rewriting things and adding more things on top of the song that we never thought of before. Can take certain members a long time for them to be happy with a part they have written.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Tommy B: Oh god, standout song? I suppose it’s a matter of opinion and preference but for me it’s probably “Road Rage Singerâ€. I wrote it one day when I was driving to work coz I find I really enjoy honking my horn at idiotic drivers. I try not to do it these days unless the driver really needs to hear it.
On the other hand a good crowd pleaser for us is “actin like ‘N’ animal†because we all just go nuts playing it live, we climb on top of each other and drum sticks getting chucked. Its chaos and that’s why it’ll usually be our final song of the set.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
Tommy B: We’ll we’ve got new single coming out very soon so we are working to get that together then I think we shall be working on a tour of the UK. Really just to play new places and expose our rock n roll antics to an unsuspecting crowd.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Tommy B: I just want people to dance or head bang or do whatever they do that makes them forget reality for a short time and walk away feeling that little bit better about everything.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Tommy B: World Domination baby!
