Review Fix chats with Fox Violet’s Thea, who discusses the band’s origin and single, “Trenches.â€
Review Fix: How did the project start?
Thea: Fox Violet was started by myself last year, in Los Angeles. I was looking to evolve a prior project into a more dreamy dark pop arena.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Thea: I have to feel like I’m triggered by an event to write a song, it’s a process of deep reflection that stirs that up in me. I would say I’m an observer and I soak up a lot that I am not even aware of especially visual memories. I have to feel a connection to my subconscious when I write and I use a guitar to guide me. I’m pretty surprised by what I write sometimes and where it comes from as it isn’t pre-meditated. The process of connection is really kind of scared to me and I find it really healing. Sometimes it’s just one note that might start a whole process of thoughts that end up in a song. I don’t usually have a strong concept before writing I try not to judge the process and be present. Whilst I often write in isolation, recently we just started to collaborate ad a group and are working on new singles, so I’m super stoked for that.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Thea: Trenches is the song that surprised me happily by ending up on the radio. I wrote that when I was reflecting on past relationships. Often all of my songs have a strong visual element to them, I have heavy lucid dreams and I am truly inspired by dreams. I wanted this song to feel like you were in that place between wake and sleep. I wanted it to be a sensory experience that is almost overloaded. There’s an element always of nostalgia to everything I create and that sense of looking back is also a sense where we get stranded in our dreams trying to make sense of our life, looking for signs. It’s like you want to grasp at a meaning but you just can’t. Being in the Trenches is as much about putting yourself there, and looking at your self from afar, questioning your own identity; as it is about anyone else’s identity.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
Thea: I just want to write a lot. To finish an EP, as well as tour nationally. On a personal front I would love to just continue connecting with others over the music, as long as that’s happening I’m happy.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Thea: I hope that people can relate to the feelings of the songs. As it’s an ambient project it’s as important that the instrumentation displays something intrinsic to the world the song is trying to create as the lyrics.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Thea: Writing, recording, touring ! We have a big show in LA January 30th at The Hi Hat.
