If you have written a song or a couple of songs, the next big thing that you must do is to record them. Unfortunately, renting a studio could be expensive and is unaffordable. It is beyond the reach for people who are just starting their musical careers. But you can record your music cheaply if you have a few pieces of equipment. You need a guitar, a microphone, and a computer to record your music at home. Here are a few things I do to record music at home.
1. Assemble the equipment
The first thing I do is to ensure that my computer has enough RAM. It should be capable of running a digital audio workstation. Besides, I organize the guitars, drums, and basses. I also ensure that I have an amp, a few cables, and mics in place.
2. Procedure
I start by plugging the guitar into the amp. I use an adapter to convert the 6.35mm end into a 3.5mm then plug it into the audio port on my computer. I then check and test it to ensure that the guitar is working as it should.
3.Connecting to the audio interface
I connect the audio interface and ensure that it is running. I plug the AC directly into the wall and a USB cable to connect the system to the computer. If you do this, but you realize that the PC is not recognizing the device, it may be necessary that you install drivers.
4. Connecting the microphone
I then connect a microphone to the XLR cable. One of the cables should be connected to the microphone while the other one should be connected to the audio interface.
5. Check the levels
At this point, it is necessary to check and ensure that the hardware and the software are cooperating. If they are, check the levels on the mic. The procedure to be followed when recording will depend on the software you are using.
6. Start recording
Once everything is in place, I do the last round check to ensure that there is no room for the system to fail when I click the start button. If everything is ok, I hit the start recording button. In the meantime, before I start tracking, I once again check out the structure of the song. I then let the drummer lay down the beat while allowing other people to play their part. Lastly, I give the vocals, the guitar, and the bass a chance to experiment. The multi-track technology allows me to record each track at a time.
Using an app
I can also choose to record my music using an app. Here, I select an appropriate backing track to use. I then pick the right instrumentals and the melody to use. I then upload the lyrics into a sound editor. Once it is done, I download an appropriate sound recorder and upload the instrumental into the mobile device I am using. The audio recorders guarantee low latency and help to keep the music organized. Once everything is set, I press the record button on the app and start playing the song. I then upload the song into the computer and edit the music.
Of course, there are many other options for recording music at home. But using the computer and an app makes the process easier. It allows one to record the music fast, edit, and fine-tune it.
