Review Fix chats with Pacific Rim’s Grady Evans, who discusses the band’s origin and debut single, “She.â€
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Grady Evans: We all started playing from a young age. Cam and I (Grady) have played in numerous bands together between 2012 and now. Personally, my dad Brian was really influential in my interest in music from a young age. He helped guide us in our early years, and built us a home studio in our suburban home to get us into writing at an early age.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Evans: It really depends on the song. I wrote the “bones” of She, and we finished writing it together in the studio. Someone typically comes with a full song, chorus, lick… anything. And then we jam it out as a band to refine it. Our rule is that once it’s finished, we sit on it it for a week and if we can’t remember how to play it, then we cut the song. If we can’t remember it, no one else will either.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Evans: The possibility of getting to write and perform songs for a living, and having our music impact others, just like our favourite artists have impacted us.
Review Fix: What does music mean to you?
Evans: Music is a way we can express our lives, experiences and feelings through creativity. It has always been a major outlet for all of us, through the highs and lows of life. Music means the world to all of us.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Evans: We write genre-less rock songs. We draw influence from all genres, and try to portray the most interesting elements of each wrapped up in rock songs. We don’t have any gimmicks: We are two guitars, a bass, drums and vocals. We write songs to catch the modern ear, but stick to our roots in delivering that ‘BS’ rock and roll experience that people have loved for decades.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Evans: Our live shows are very energetic, hectic; some might say over the top. We record songs one way, but like to expand on the original ideas when we play live through deep breakdowns, alternative endings, crowd engagement, and so on. We really do have two versions of every song we write. We set the tone early, and go full out no matter the show, venue or audience. People generally leave our gigs a little sweaty to say the least.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?
Evans: Our debut song is about more than just her. It’s about uncertainty, the inability to trust, and simply letting things happen. It’s the anxiety of making a decision with consequences, and not being able to know if it was the right one until the damage has already been done. It is inspired by real life experiences.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
Evans: We are currently finishing off our debut album, and have four more single releases leading up to the album launch in the fall. The next single ‘Saturdays’ will coming out at the end of May.
