Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Rachel Beck, who discusses her new single, “Warrior.â€
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Rachel Beck: I grew up in a very musical family and so I was always surrounded. My lullabies were classic rock tunes drifting up through the floorboards as my dad jammed in the basement; my Nanny could play just about any song by ear on the piano at family parties; and I grew up singing in harmony with my three sisters (I, as one of the youngest, never got to sing the melody — haha).
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Beck: My creative process definitely comes in waves. I can go months without finishing a song and then I will write three in a week. There are always melodies bouncing around in my head, but lyrics take longer to emerge for me.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Beck: I think just about anything can inspire a song. On my upcoming record, I have songs inspired by my daughter, the forest, the climate crisis, a photocopier, and a friend’s song. Some of those have long stories behind them! :)
Review Fix: What does music mean to you?
Beck: It’s all about connection for me.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Beck: I would describe it as melodic and lush with layers of piano, synth, strings, and percussion. It’s chill, but rhythmic — and the vocals are always at the forefront.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Beck: The live shows are pretty close to the studio sound, with the exception of a string section — but I do have a cellist in my band who creates some beautiful sounds! My live band is a four-piece with piano, cello, electric bass and percussion/samples. My drummer has a cool sampling pad which allows him to cue electronic samples from the record. We’ve been having lots of fun blending those into our live show.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?
Beck: My latest single “Warrior” is inspired by my four-year-old daughter, Nora. She is a little force of light and strength. She is fearless. I got thinking about her and the kind of woman I think/hope she will grow up to be and this song was born. She dances in the opening sequence of the music video for the single, which is pretty special.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
Beck: 2020 is full of good times! I am touring across Canada in support of my new record, playing some great showcases in Canada and Europe, and releasing my record in June.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Beck: The plan is pretty simple: keep writing, keep recording, keep touring. I love being on the road and connecting with people.
