Review Fix Exclusive: Randall Jermaine and Alexa Ray Talk ‘Fearless’ And More

Review Fix chats with Randall Jermaine and Alexa Ray, who discuss their origin in music and their new single, “Fearless.”

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

ALEXA: I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I always had a passion for music and singing and new I wanted to be a singer for as long as I can remember. I first started taking lessons around the age of 10, from then I joined a professional children’s chorus and continued studying music through high school and into university.

RANDALL: Music always ran in the blood, my father is a jazz guitarist and vocalist, we went to many of his gigs, so i was always surrounded by music

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

ALEXA: I have a couple different ways I work. A lot of what I do when asked to collaborate with trailer composers is Top lining. Most commonly there is already a few phrases started and my job is to find the story and put lyrics and a melody line to it. Often with this style of process I really let my mind go blank and the music guide me. With film and tv style music there is so much emotion already in the track I just need to put into words the story thats there- like a translator.

Specifically with Randall and I’s collaboration with the album Fearless I wanted to tell the stories of things I was experiencing or going through. When I start from scratch I typically like a good old pen and paper by the piano.

RANDALL: I listen to a lot of music on radio and internet. I always make sure I’m up to date with the latest sound and style in order to keep me current. When creating a song it could either start with some chords, a melody or a single sound could even inspire me, its really anything musically that could set it off.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

ALEXA: I take inspiration from everywhere. Sometimes its a phrase someone says that inspires the theme for a song, or things happening around me. I find that good music is relatable so I always try to stay honest when I write and from personal experience.

RANDALL: I love seeing other fellow musicians succeed, that normally drives me to do better. The last thing I want is to be comfortable, I believe in always striving for greatness and perfection.

Review Fix: What does music mean to you?

ALEXA: Music is my life. Before it was something I did for fun and enjoyment, and I still do, but over the years as I’ve begun to write my own music its certainly turned into a form of therapy for me. I can’t imagine a life without it.

RANDALL: Music is everything, it has become my life, joy, and passion, music is so important in our lives, it’s what adds the colour to our everyday lives.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

ALEXA: Epic, emotional vocals that weave between the pop and classical realm accompanied by huge cinematic and electronic productions inspired by the sounds of tv and film score.

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

ALEXA: Recording in the studio certainly gives you more control and allows you to sound more polished. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I sound too different between live and studio work. I try not to go too crazy even though the possibilities are endless with the effects you can add to manipulate your voice. I try not to record or do anything I couldn’t do live so that I sound as real as possible so if/when I go to sing live people recognize me and I sound exactly as I do on my recordings.

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?

ALEXA: This track was inspired by the societal hypocrisies and specifically my experience of it within the music industry; we’re ridiculed if we don’t look a certain way or are a little different, but then also told to be your own person and stand out. We’re told to love ourselves and our curves but are still fat-shamed etc. The song was a message to be you, no matter what. A reminder that you’re never going to please everyone so at the end of the day, just be you!

RANDALL: My inspiration for the music came from working with Alexa Ray, she is such a talent, her lyrics really digs deep, the way we work is such a comfortable process, we feed off each other creatively.

Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2020?

ALEXA: This album release has been my main focus of 2020, just trying to really connect with people and show everyone what I’m about. I’m continuing to write and record so I’m just trying to stay focused and really keep telling the stories that need to be heard.

RANDALL: I just want to put out good music and build great relationships, i would also love our music to be featured on film campaigns, ads etc….

Review Fix: What’s next?

RANDALL: Only up from here! I feel like we’ve only just started and already working on another album. We’re excited for what’s coming up and can’t wait to share it with everyone!

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

RANDALL: Thanks for listening and reading, we’re both really excited to share our music and if you’d like to continue following our journey you can follow us on Instagram & Spotify @alexaraymusic and @randall.jermaine
