Review Fix chats with BlackJack Love’s Azza Sergent (Main Songwriter/Vocalist/Guitarist) who discusses the band’s origin and more.
Review Fix: How did the project start?
Azza Sergent: Blackjack Love has been around for a few years now, but I was on my own in the beginning (Azza). Since I recruited the other boys (Matt, Sam & Nick) it’s been live for a year or two now. It all stemmed from myself recording a song in LA, then I came back to England & wrote a couple more. That then ended up being the debut album ‘Bullets & Blues’, & it all went from there really.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Sergent: I usually start with noodling on an acoustic, then just kinda jam melodies with random words. If it’s any good, I’ll do a quick recording of it on my phone & send it to the boys. If they dig it then I’ll finish it or whatever. Then we get to the practice room & hash it out between us. I usually have some sort of idea in my head when writing a song for certain instruments or patterns, but the boys then take this tiny idea I have & put their own spin on it to make it epic.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Sergent: I’d say either ‘Carryin’ On’ or ‘Before I Leave’, they’re both up there! The first one I had this drum pattern idea in my head for ages, so I wrote the guitar around that & put the words to it. The second one I wrote in 20 minutes because we had a recording session booked with our label (The Animal Farm) & I needed another song. Luckily it happened to be strong & catchy. Which was a touch.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
Sergent: I think everyone can safely say the goals have drastically changed from the start of the year to now! So for now, it’s just to get more of our music out there for people to hear & keep practicing for when we can play live again.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Sergent: I always think music can change your mood. So if you’ve had a bad day, you can listen to a song & it brightens it up, or if you’re in a mood to party it gets you going etc. I want it to affect people in different ways depending on what track of ours they’re listening to. Hopefully some of our stuff will make people think about life & the world, but then also cheer people up if they’re down.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Sergent: We have a single coming out in a few weeks called ‘I Want War’, so we’ll get a video sorted. Then get back down the studio to record some new stuff. Then after that, world domination, or whatever, y’know?
