Review Fix chats with Lunar’s Alex Bosson, drummer and primary songwriter, who details the band’s origin and more.
Review Fix: How did the project start?
Alex Bosson: The project started in 2013 between myself and former guitarist Ryan Erwin. He and I had been friends since we were about 10 years old. Our musical paths had gone in different directions, but at that point we had both been appreciating progressive rock and metal, and neither of us had anything going on musically, so we decided to do something together. And thus, Lunar was born.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
AB: Well with the most recent album, “Eidolon,†I had the concept in my mind first. The idea to go through the stages of grief that the ones left behind feel when a loved one dies. This idea came to me, obviously, after Ryan Erwin had unexpectedly passed away. Losing not only a bandmate, but one of my closest friends in life hit me pretty hard. I dwelled on it for quite some time and then had the idea to channel the thought into the musical concept. After that, I started with writing the guitar parts and built everything else around that.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
AB: Definitely think the stand out song is “Comfort.†Seems to be a fan favorite. And one of my personal favorites as well. And the process was basically what I was explaining before; had the idea of the whole album first, then knew where I wanted to go with each track. Then started with writing guitars and built the rest of it around that.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
AB: 2020’s been a rough one for most people I think. Hard to set these goals in the music industry right now with it basically shut down. Plus there’s not too much of 2020 left. We have plans in motion to release “Eidolon†on vinyl before 2020 is over, which should be cool! And we’re hard at work on album #3, but that definitely won’t come until 2021.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
AB: As long as somebody can find some positive impact or help from anything I’ve written, then I’m happy. I want people to draw from it whatever they can. Whether they just appreciate it musically, or draw some personal relation to the lyrics / concepts. There’s plenty of music out there that has excited me, inspired me, or helped me out of dark times, so if anything I write can do any of those things for someone, then I’m happy.
Review Fix: What’s next?
AB: As I was mentioning before; we’re going to be releasing “Eidolon†on a limited edition hand-numbered vinyl pressing! Don’t have the exact date yet, but that should be available before the end of 2020. And aside from that, we’re working hard on album #3 right now. It’s still fairly early on in the process so I can’t divulge too much about it yet, but I think it’s going to be the best one yet! It should be out sometime in 2021. Make sure to follow all our pages for updates on all of the process.
