Review Fix Exclusive: Vox Rea’s Kate Kurdyak Talks Dose Me Up And More

Review Fix chats with Vox Rea’s Kate Kurdyak, who discusses the band’s new single, Dose Me Up, as well as their creative process and goals for the future.

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Kate Kurdyak: Our grandmother was a music teacher and she set the foundation for our love of music and words. She used to look after Lauren and I when our parents were at work and she taught us to read and to play classical music. I don’t think we’d be musicians if it wasn’t for her.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Kurdyak: It’s ever evolving but usually starts with a chord progression to set the tone. Most of the time the words and music come all at once after that. That being said, the magic often happens outside of the process in the sense that the best songs come when you let go of any formula and just let the music speak for itself.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Kurdyak: I’ve been really into german philosophy lately… the existential abyss and all that. I think a lot of our music is inspired by questions without answers. What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be free? There’s something about poetry and art that cuts to the core of those kinds of questions.

Review Fix: What does music mean to you?

Kurdyak: Music means everything to us. A life without music is no life at all.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Kurdyak: Cinematic soundscapes dripped in harmony, water and wine ?

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Kurdyak: The harmonies between all of our voices are featured pretty heavily in our live shows so there’s a density to the layered voices all singing together that you don’t hear quite as much in the studio work.

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?

Kurdyak: A melancholic kind of nostalgia for our childhoods.

Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2020?

Kurdyak: Release as much music as possible!!

Review Fix: What’s next?

Kurdyak: We’re working a lot on the visuals for the music and we have a video for Dose Me Up coming out very soon.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Kurdyak: Like, follow, subscribe ;)
