Review Fix chats with Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate singer/multi-instrumentalist/producer Malcolm Galloway, who discusses his origin in music and the band’s goals for the future.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Malcolm Galloway: I’ve been making music for as long as I can remember, but taking it more seriously since 2011 when we released our first Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate album. My music has always been divided between my rock music and my classical/minimalist music, and hopefully they complement each other.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Galloway: It varies depending on the piece, but usually, because of my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which makes sitting upright to work difficult, I compose lying down with a laptop on my chest.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Galloway: History, current affairs, science, science fiction, patterns.Â
Review Fix: What does music mean to you? Â
Galloway: Being able to create and perform allows me to cope despite chronic pain.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Galloway: On the classical side Steve Reich is a big inspiration. I like the bubbling enthusiasm of patterns emerging from the combination of simple elements of different lengths.
On the rock side Marillion and Pink Floyd have been major influences.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest EP?
Galloway: I released my latest solo classical/minimalist release Wasp 76b at the same time as out latest Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate EP. The classical side, without my vocals, is more relaxing for me as a producer to work on. It was nice to work on them in parallel. The classical one is more joyful than the very heartfelt but depressing ‘Feeling Great’.Â
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2020?
Galloway: I’m working on the 6th Hats Off…. album.
