Fear Case #1 Review: Compelling

Unsolved mysteries are quite a commodity, especially with the internet. There are so many and the fact that many of them are fascinating that it will never die down. Comic writer Matt Kindt  along with artists Tyler and Hillary Jenkins have a whopper of an unsolved mystery in the new comic “Fear Case.”

Two detectives new to the Secret Service are given the same unsolved case that all rookies get: they must find a case that’s been around for centuries and has caused everyone who had it die. This is the kind of case that even retired agents who tried to solve it go crazy. It’s the typical story of a mysterious that causes the owner to come down with ultra-bad luck or even death. While there are tons of items like this, writing a story about it can be great if the planning goes correctly. Kindt has so far created a story that is interesting and compelling enough to warrant readers continued reading of the comic. The two agents do have that buddy cop thing going for them, but it seems more realistic and less like what Hollywood thinks a buddy cop scenario is like.

The artwork has an interesting aesthetic to it. While the character designs look like basic designs seen in mystery comics, the colors do stand out. It’s hard to explain. While colorful, they also keep the dark feel of the plot which adds atmosphere and makes the one gory part of the comic a lot more power to it than if other styles are used. “Fear Case” takes an old idea and adds a great plot that is compelling and chilling at the same time. The artwork also helps with the whole experience.

Kindt and the Jenkins have crafted a comic that will please mystery fans and will keep you not just guessing but wanting to see more of what that case really is and where it came from.
