Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter DAWGGONEDAVIS, who details the creative process behind her newest track, “Clean Slate,†as well as her goals for the future.
Review Fix: What inspired this track?
DAWGGONEDAVIS: The inspiration for this track was the real-life loss of a young family member whom I was extremely close to. He was murdered in a wrong house “home invasion.†There is a lot of anger in the song. Other inspirations come from seeing how civilizations have not changed or evolved – all sorts of hate and cruelty still exist.
Review Fix: What was the writing process like?
DAWGGONEDAVIS: The writing process was fast and intense. Fans know I am fun and lively for the most part. When I found the words in my head: “Hell’s bells and Heaven’s jingles. We are all the same, eatin’ pringles.†I knew I could put a positive spin in the powerful song, genuinely. I wrote, “double date, choose chips, not hate.†That helps me to smile and remember my dad eating a lot of potato chips when we were kids.
Review Fix: How is it different from your other work?
DAWGGONEDAVIS: All of my songs are 100% narratives of my life’s content. “Clean Slate†is a Banger as Hellmut Wolf and Chago G. Williams say. It is different because it is a humongously sad song wrapped in Hellmut’s Saxophone and Chago’s brilliant, fitting words. I really cannot tell you how Chago reads and knows me so well. What a gift he, Romain Duchein guitar, and Jack T Perry’s popping/knocking drum rhythm provide in “Clean Slate.†Yet, I will not let grim rule my nutty self, so we must have Love, Hope, Charity, and Jesus, ultimately.
Review Fix: How do you want this track to affect people?
DAWGGONEDAVIS: I hope folks are impressed with the composing Hellmut has done; the sheer intensity of it. I hope young teen fans, for example, have some opened eyes and ears. In seeing the radio plays thus far, I am beyond warmed and happy the kids and young adults totally dig “Clean Slate.†Really, from the bottom of my cold and hot heart, I pray that folks can “choose Chips, not Hate.†Chips are cheap; hate comes with a wicked price.
Review Fix: What was it like to work with Chago again?
DAWGGONEDAVIS: Awesome! Cool! Unique! Blessed! I just smile every time Chago nails it. Wow – what a man of insight, voice, and empathy.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?
DAWGGONEDAVIS: We will put out a CD or an EP of 5 to 6 songs. For me, I want to do a full CD, again. Seems the year is edging toward Spring very quickly. My goals include lots of live performances, as my personality and smile bust out. My goal is to get on television more and achieve Billboard standings, as well. Chago, Hellmut, and I will continue to shock the world a bit – in a great way, plus continue to write real tales of my life that make me wide-eyed, too. 😊
Review Fix: How did 2020 make you a better musician?
DAWGGONEDAVIS: Being cooped up a great deal of time was not good at all; however, I went into other’s songs from the Eagles, Elvis, ToTo, Simon & Garfunkel, Guns & Roses, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Mumford & Sons, and many others new and old to absorb different perspectives and sounds.
