A missing person always causes people to feel some extreme emotion. Some people even become loose cannons and even seem rude to most people. Or so that’s what seems like the case in ‘Dead Dog’s Bite†written and drawn by Tyler Boss.
In the small town of Pendermills, Josephine “Joe†Bradley is more than upset about the disappearance of her friend Cormac “Mac†Guffin. The police have no evidence and Joe is basically a loose cannon to the point where she’s downing drugs like they’re candy.
This is a weird comic. It has a weird “Twilight Zone†style narrator who doesn’t make any sense and makes the comic come off as a horror but the rest of the comic makes it seem like a mystery. He may be important to the plot or even the world, but right now there is no answer to that question. Despite the weird formatting the story is still interesting. Joe may come off as dour, but her circumstances are still understandable. While the reason for Mac’s disappearance is still unknown, the plot is still interesting enough for readers to want to see where this mystery is going.
Boss has an amazing art style that does many things to a person. The narrator seems like he’s out of place in the comic seeing has how he’s colorful and looks like he belongs in a Silver Age “DC†comic while the rest of the comic is dark and serious. The character designs outside the narrator are nice, especially Mac’s picture on the milk carton. The only head scratching thing is Boss’s love for the color red. It’s practically everywhere. While there may be some deeper meaning to it his love of red is still a mystery.
In fact, everything about “Dead Dog’s Bite†is a mystery. That’s not a negative thing since Boss does weave a comic that not only has a plot that makes the reader want to find out more is not just to gain answers as to what’s going on but the art also adds to the whole confusing mix that makes this comic something of a curiosity to those who read it.
