Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Tony Benn, who discusses his origin in music, creative process, goals and more.
Review Fix: How did the project start?
Tony Benn: I have been playing most of these songs live for years and I really wanted to record them, so I went to the Animal Farm Studio in London to get them done. Now with all that’s going on in the world it seemed like the a fitting time to release the single “If we make it through the Winter”.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Benn: A joy and a torture. I’m very lucky because I love it and coming up with the initial idea for a tune is usually fun and relatively easy, the downside of this is that finishing a song is much harder than starting a new one so it takes me an age.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Benn: I hope they are all standout but the one I’m really loving at the moment is “If I cross your mindâ€. I think it is the song of mine that sounds the least like anything else, but the most like myself live it’s thoughtful (at least I think it is) it’s odd and vaguely traditional, I wrote it on a Summer day in my kitchen (I write nearly exclusively in kitchens) and I was just feeling great, I was happy with my life thinking about the past fondly but with no desire to go back to it.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
Benn: Years ago my brother got me into writing a list at the start of each year with your goals for every year you are alive so 20 goals if you are 20, 40 if you are 40…that kind of thing. Usually I’m not the best at it but this year I’m flying through it and my list has everything from ambitious baking and devising the perfect set list to tour plans, but my main goal is to be as content and successful as I can be, without one endangering the other.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Benn: I would like them to enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoy playing it.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Benn: Well short term (the next 10minutes) I’m going to make dinner for my wife, mother and sister. Long term I plan to release two more singles before, finish writing songs for my next album and do a small tour or if I can’t go on tour at least to have booked one for next year.
