Review Fix chats with Yo Kinky’s Tom Unish and Laura Wight, who discuss their new song, Wire,’ as well as their goals for the future and more.
“Wire†follows the previously released singles, “Resistance,†which finds the duo exploring a more delicate yet simultaneously strong and confident mood. With spaced-out, rockabilly-tinged guitars bouncing through the song’s driving, hypnotic layers of sound, they painted a sonic landscape that yearns for much-needed intimacy in a time of social distancing and isolation. “Someone I Used To Know,†the duo’s debut single expands the stereo image with a wall of undulated guitars. Since its release, “Someone I Used To Know” has been in heavy rotation at WFMU, and was featured on the show Three Chord Monte’s best songs of 2020 as well as “engaging and smart” from multiple outlets. Yo Kinky are already forging a name for themselves among the disillusioned and hopeful. |
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
TOM: I started playing guitar when I was 13, and played in bands with my friends. One of the bands recorded a demo and the experience was pretty horrendous. My disappointment led me to studying music production, which soon followed with a job at a recording studio.
LAURA: At an early age, I was a huge fan of music and attended a lot of concerts with my older sister and her friends, and with other family members. Soon, I found myself writing songs of my own, and then I started my first band at 19.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process?
TOM: I don’t have much of a process. Most of it is just sitting down and getting to work.
LAURA: I’ve learned that it’s best when my writing is unintentional, or when I’m occupied by other things and need that stress-relief by humming a made-up tune, which sometimes turns out to be a good one.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
TOM: Everything.
LAURA: Pain and pleasure.
Review Fix: What does music mean to you?
TOM: It’s pretty important. I’d feel lost without it.
LAURA: It’s the one thing that makes sense here, lol.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
TOM: Post-pop
LAURA: Screamo. Lol, just kidding.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
LAURA: Can’t use autotune.
TOM: Yeah you can.
LAURA: Oh, nevermind then. Stages are dirtier than studios.
TOM: Just to be clear, we don’t use autotune.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?
LAURA: “Wire†was inspired by the band Wire. Friends have told me over the years they really dig my short Pink Flag type tunes that have just one or two parts. This song was chosen as a single ‘cause it’s not so obviously a pop song. It’s more-so post-pop. ;)
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?
LAURA: To continue having fun as Yo Kinky.
TOM: To not break up. But if we do, at least we never sucked.
Review Fix: What’s next?
LAURA: We have some new songs that we’re really excited about, so we’re gonna record a couple of them next month at a studio with the aim of releasing something by the Summer.
