Review Fix chats with Winterbeach’s Angel (Bjarte Engelsen Syse) and singer Tiam (Truls Marius Aarra), who discuss the band’s origin and more.
Review Fix: How did the project start?
Tiam: We played together in another rock band project named Quiet Men earlier but soon learned that 5 band members were at least 2 too many! So we decided to split into two bands which also gave us the opportunity to focus on a fully synthetic route and clean away all traces of guitar. We have worked together as WinterBeach for 5-6 years now, and are really starting to find our shape.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Angel: Usually it starts with me drafting a song, which in turn has been processed by the band. Most of the time, the songs are without lyrics, which has given Tiam a lot of leeway with Mal McNaughton to write lyrics and to find or possibly change melody lines. Our drummer, Baz, creates the drum patterns. So it’s a complex process where we all help to create what will be the end result, but it also gives everyone an ownership of the song.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Angel: I think that question has as many answers as members of the band. We all have our special song. Personally I have an extra strong bond to “Playing dead” which I started on a late winter night. The song really only reflected a mood I was in, but when Mal and Tiam created lyrics and melody lines to the song, I experienced that the song found its own place in my mindâ€
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?
Tiam: Well 2021 isn’t exactly the big year for big plans. It’s too unpredictable due to the corona situation. But plan number one is to release WinterBeach’s debut LP and promote it. After that, we hope to play some gigs and finally meet our fans!
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Tiam: The music comes first, and since there is not a single major chord in our songs, the lyrics tend to describe the more dramatic aspects of life. But there is always a hope in our darkness.
Angel: Our music is made to make people listen, think, enjoy, feel, dream…
Review Fix: What’s next?
Tiam: We have many new song sketches in progress, and we are really looking forward to start working closely with the talented people at Animal Farm to further refine our music style. In the future WinterBeach hope to develop and explore an even purer sound universe.
