One of the more recent interesting characters created by Mike Mignola is Sarah Jewell. It was only a matter of time she got her own comic series and she did with “The House of Lost Horizons†by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson with artists Leila Del Duca and Michelle Madsen.
Sarah Jewell and friend Marie-Therese LaFleur find themselves on an island in the Golden Terminus where Jewell’s friend Lilian Makepeace is auctioning off her dead husband’s occult artifacts. Jewell is informed by Makepeace that her lawyer was murdered. Now Jewell has to find out who did it in a house full of guests who are there for the auction.
It’s an interesting mystery with the added bonus of all those occult items in the house. Those items could play a huge role in how these deaths happened. However, there is a possibility that whatever occult reason could be a letdown. Mignola has had times where the reason is rather underwhelming but with Roberson things can be great. The cast of characters in the house all seem interesting. They do seem like authentic upper-class people you’d typically see in high class places in the 1920s. There could be some serious plot brewing where one or all of these characters could be involved and that might create some great twists.
The artwork is amazing. The character designs look like what people in the 1920s dressed like, the facial expressions are spot on, the backgrounds and colors all look great. There are only a handful of cases where the artwork doesn’t match the high quality, but you need to be looking for them in order to notice. Beyond that, there’s little to complain about the art.
The first Sarah Jewell series “The House of Lost Horizons†has a brilliant setting that could be great if done right with excellent art. This comic is worth checking out and it will make readers want to continue just to see who or what is causing the murders.
