Review Fix Exclusive: Johnny Stanec Talks Origin in Music And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Johnny Stanec, who discusses his origin in music, new single and goals for the future.

Review Fix: How did the project start?

Johnny Stanec: Well, like all my songs I do my best to let things happen naturally. I have been releasing music for years, but these new songs took shape during the shutdown last year. I started working on some new ideas while stuck at home and eventually got these new songs recorded. Much of the work was done at home, which was a first for me. I never plan things out and an idea can start simply and go in a number of different directions as the recording process takes shape. I think these new songs are some of my best so far. I really took my time developing them and trying new things while recording them. I hope people like what they hear.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Stanec: I never set aside time to write, I just let it happen. The guitar is always close by, and when I am in the mood I will pick it up and play. Sometimes you write something quickly and other times it takes a few attempts to work it out, but it can never be forced. I don’t have a specific process, just that I let it happen as it happens. I write because I love writing songs. Coming up with a new song is special and I never take it for granted. Sometimes you write a lot in a short amount of time, other times it is a less is more type of thing, but I’m always working on something.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Stanec: I don’t have one specific song. I feel they all matter to me. Obviously a listener will take away different things from different songs, so I let someone else decide which ones are standouts. I am happy when any song connects with someone. I may think a song is my best work, but someone else will hear something in a different song, and it may be one I never thought was going to have that effect. Every song has its place.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?

Stanec: The last year was hard and now that everyone is getting back to normal I am looking forward to live music making its return. I have some shows in the works for later this fall and after that more new music. The main goal is always to have more people hear my music and to keep connecting with a wider audience. It’s never easy. There is always so much to compete with, so it’s hard work, but I enjoy the process.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Stanec: I write honestly and with sincerity, I think. I hope that sets me apart from the usual pop music that is out there. I am not trying to be overly profound, just to write something that a listener can enjoy. Music is an escape and even a sad song can provide respite in our nonstop world. I write relatable lyrics about everyday issues. Whatever outlook you have, I think there is something for everyone.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Stanec: I just released a new song on June 18th called ‘It Was Easy Now’ and I have a follow-up single coming out August 13th called ‘Feels Like I’m Fading Away’. From there, more new music. Most likely a few more singles first and then possibly a new record at some point. Live shows are forthcoming and I plan on keeping myself busy for the rest of the year and into the next.
