Review Fix chats with River Knight’s Darren Knight and Stone River, who discuss the band’s origin, new album and so much more.
Review Fix: How did the project start?
Darren: I was going through some dark times, my beautiful wife Steph had died from cancer, and as a release I started writing songs. I had the main chord progression and the melodies, but only a couple of lines to start the song. I struggled to get what was in my head down on paper so I called my mate Stone to jam on them.
Stone: Yeah, those first songs were Heaven’s Door and Sense Out Of Crisis.
Darren: Uh huh, and we carried on from there.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Darren: I can have a riff and a melody and Stone will write some words.
Stone: Or sometimes it’s an organic jam, you know, we’re just playing and it happens, such as Mystic Miles.
Darren: Sometimes a complete song is brought to practice. It really does vary.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Darren: I guess, Sense Out Of Crisis, it means so much. Written with love and support. It’s my tribute but it was also a crutch, do you know what I mean?
Stone: At this moment in time it’s Elope for me. That was one of those jam sessions writing about whatever had transpired at that time. It just flowed.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2021?
Darren: For our songs to be heard more, getting out playing live again after Covid, and recording our newest songs.
Stone: What can I add to that? Love playing live, I love recording and I love it when people listen to our tunes.
Darren: The main priority for the rest of 2021 though is to get our album in as many ears as possible.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Stone: I’d love for people to be able to relate in some way, to connect on a level particular to them. But essentially I’d like people to get enjoyment from our music.
Darren: I want people to get the melody in their heads, but also get something out of the words, something that relates to their stories.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Darren: Hopefully, we’ll have a couple of new videos soon, we have our brand new debut album GROW to get out there, and then the new album which is pretty much already written.
Stone: Who knows? Whatever comes our way. But if we were to talk fantasy land, if the universe aligned at just the right moment I’d love to work with WWE. Or AEW. Or Impact. Or ROH. Or any wrestling promotion really, I’m a lifelong wrestling fan. I even have the Undertaker tattooed on my thigh…
