Review Fix chats with CP Fletcher, singer in A Permanent Shadow, who discusses the origin of his newest endeavor, goals in music and so much more.
Review Fix: How did the project start?
CP Fletcher: I got fed up with drumming for other people, so I started writing my own songs. Once I was confident enough about them I teamed up with a great arranger and producer and we recorded our first album in 2018. A Permanent Shadow is not a band in the traditional sense, it’s rather myself plus a series of producers and guest musicians.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Fletcher: I write all the lyrics and basic melodies and then I present those to my two producer friends Albert and ValentÃ. They are both very good arrangers and players and usually do a great job fleshing out my basic song ideas with arrangements for keyboards, guitar and whatever the song requires. In terms of lyrics, I get inspired by personal experiences but also stuff I read or watch on TV.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Fletcher: On our new album we have a song called “Day Zeroâ€. It’s about the 2011 tsunamis in Japan written from the perspective of a seagull witnessing the devastation. I wrote the lyrics first and then divided the music into different segments depending on the words. It’s almost nine minutes long, but I couldn’t have made it much shorter as the words kept pouring out and I didn’t want to edit myself.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?
Fletcher: Promote our new single “Shining Star†and hopefully get back to playing live. We are rehearsing different formats, from all acoustic to full band, and I’d really love to take our music around the world.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Fletcher: I hope people can identify with some of the lyrical content and will also be able to remember the choruses. I would like our music to affect people in a way that I feel affected by great songs. A good song should make you think but also want to get up and dance. It provokes both a cerebral and physical reaction.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Fletcher: Our second album “Humdrum†will be out in early 2022, but we have been working on the third one for a while now, as well as a covers EP. So the next step is start recording those songs properly.
