Review Fix Exclusive: Cal Benny Talks Hybri: Powerful Shadow and More

Review Fix chats with Hybrid artist Cal Benny, who discusses her origin in comics and creative process and goals for her web comic series, Hybri.

Review Fix: How did you know a career in comics was for you?

Cal Benny: Well the career of comic making is a long and hard, I knew that. But I still wanted share my stories with everyone. Story telling is what I feel good at.

Review Fix: Who inspires you creatively?

Benny: Well to be honest it’s not my family, it was the people I shared my story, I originally stared Hybri in high school as a way to pass language arts.

Review Fix: Who are your favorite artists?

Benny: I’d say Clamp (creator of Cardcaptor Sakura and magic knights rayearth) and a Well known Bob Ross.

Review Fix: What have you learned from them?

Benny: Well not personally I wanted to draw more like Clamp, the shines and tones is what I aimed for mostly as for Bob Ross I wanted to try painting and learn tips on how to so I just gathered tips until I got what I liked.

Review Fix: How are your comics different or special?

Benny: Well I think my comics are a bit more colorful, I like throwing people off a bit. When you see a nice colorful scene you get the feel of a childish setting but you never expect any blood or any dark themes within the story.

Review Fix: What about this comic? Sell us. Sell us hard.

Benny: I have several comics I’m working on, one is a normal slice of life the other is a supernatural and Sci fi. Hybri: powerful shadow  is about an ordinary girl who has a normal life until she meets a strange boy, then that’s where everything falls. She soon doesn’t know who she is or what she is. Meanwhile she goes on the run hiding from someone who knows more about her than she does.

Review Fix: What do you think you need to do to be as successful as you want to be?

Benny: Well success is really determined on how you view it, to me its when you don’t give up, and you finish your goal. My goal right now is just to finish my comics so I can start others lol. When I do finish Hybri: powerful shadow I’m pretty sure it’ll be hard to not work on it, but I’ll keep making stories.

Review Fix: How does it feel to be a woman in comics? What are some challenges that you face?

Benny: Being a woman in comics making many would already assume you’re a romance writer, which is what I don’t like but other than that I haven’t faced much challenges yet. But they will be coming.

Review Fix: Who do you think will dig this web comic the most?

Benny: Well if you’re a person that loves supernatural things and going to other worlds like our own than I feel this is the right comic for you.

Review Fix: How do you want your books to be remembered?

Benny: I want my books to be remembered as any other comics, to be enjoyable for the reader.

Review Fix: What are your long-term goals for your work?

Benny: Right now I wanna be known as the person who has fun with what I do. Doing what I love is a complication in the adult life. So I wanna have fun with whatever comics I’m working on.

Review Fix: Why should someone support your work?

Benny: Well its entirely up to them, I’m not in a rush to get fans but I feel it would be great to see how my comic will grow.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Do what makes you feel like you, if you can’t draw, don’t worry we all start somewhere. Tell your own stories there’s always someone out there that’s willing to read your work.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Benny: Maybe some animation, I still have one story from high school that I want to bring to life.

Review Fix: Where can people find out more?
