Review Fix chats with Rebecca “DawgGone†Davis, who discusses her new single, “Appreciation.â€
About Rebecca DGD:
hrough the freewheeling litany of legends (Tom Petty, Motley Crue, Steve Lukather, Grace Slick, Joe Walsh, Glenn Frey, and Don Henley) on her most recent international hit “Raybans in the Rain†(#16 on the Euro Indie Music Chart), one of the grandest and quirkiest pleasures of the Kansas City based rapper, rocker and songwriter’s array of smash singles is the playful namechecking that celebrates her lifelong love for rock and roll. DawgGoneDavis (DGD) has gone coo-coo for Cummings now.
Rebecca regales us with her passion once again on “Appreciation,†her latest infectious jam featuring a killer vocal hook by longtime Snoop Dogg producer Chago G. Williams, drawing on her customary wit, style and infectious rhyming to pay absolute, gratitude-filled homage to rock legend and Canadian Music Industry Hall of Famer Burton Cummings, best known as the lead singer/songwriter for The Guess Who from 1966-75 – a span that included their era-defining hits “American Woman,†“These Eyes,†“No Time,†“No Sugar Tonight,†“Share the Land†and “Clap for the Wolfman.â€
“Appreciation†is Rebecca DGD’s incredible fifth collaboration with Williams, capping a hitmaking streak that includes the hard-hitting, pandemic era cuts “Darkest Hour†(#5 on the Euro Indie Chart), “No More†(#11) and “Clean Slate†(#7) as well as “Raybans in the Rain,†a festive celebration of summer, Rebecca’s favorite season.Â
Review Fix: How did this song happen?
Rebecca DGD: A few months ago, a good friend, Roger Diamond sent me a video of Burton Cummings and The Guess who in concert performing, “These Eyes.” I was floored! I knew the band and really, really liked them and totally appreciated all of Burton Cummings’ talents and looks.
It was this humongous spark of: “I have to write a song about the great talent of the Canadian, Burton Cummings; and I threw in Roger Daltrey of The Who (whom I also Love). I started forwarding the performance around to all my friends, family and associates. I mean, that song in that moment it was performed, knocked my over. I knew Cummings is great on the flute and our Hellmut Wolf is known and recognized world-wide on the Flute and Sax. So I thought let’s have a duo or a flute competition or something. Hellmut came through with a winner of a song with his flute; even the Christian stations are playing it. (kind of giggling here) Then Chago G. Williams pulls out the most appropriate hook (as they say, “hook, line, and sinker man”
Review Fix: What do you appreciate the most in your life?
Rebecca DGD: My family and music (especially Classic Rock and our new form of Rap & Roll. I live for my nieces and nephews (and the Kansas City Chiefs football team). I more than appreciate Hellmut Wolf, my manager, composer, Producer, and the “Like of my Life.” Have to respect his woman. lol
Review Fix: What do you need to appreciate more?
Rebecca DGD: I don’t know if it is “appreciate more” of Jesus, the Christ. I know it is serve Him more and not get a big ego; because really, we all can’t be Burton Cummings and Roger Daltrey. heee heee I am humble and open about how amazingly blessed with gifts of writing and performing I have been given. We want to build a name and brand; that is going to take continued work and risk taking.
Review Fix: What are your goals for this track?
Rebecca DGD: We all intend for this song to be in the top 10 world-wide; that is the great goal. It is very popular in Canada already and that is thrilling and fun. Hellmut created the video and we hope folks enjoy it. It is unique, for certain. We need Cummings to hook up with us and make a cameo appearance or even jam with “the band.” It is a professional Tribute song to Burton Cummings’ talents and voice – so come on over. Australia and New Zealand are to radio spotlight shows on the song. That is quite fun!!
Review Fix: What’s your favorite element of this track?
Rebecca DGD: The fun of mixing “Horton hears The Who and rocks out at the zoo. Burton Guesses Who and rocks out me and you!! “I’m an American Woman; I missed the last sermon.” I absolutely dig that Burton was Classically trained on the piano…..so cool. My dad was quite, quite good as a pianist in his day.
Review Fix: How is it different from your other work?
Rebecca DGD: Flute-o-rama! I can’t brag on my boss enough. Hellmut created the Rebecca DGD beast. The day we met – the earth stopped momentarily and birthed a new puppy dawg via Mr. Wolf’s vision and talent. Sometimes he rolls his eyes at this US woman, but he gets me.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Rebecca DGD: The second CD, titled: “Raybans in the Rain” will come out officially with my Publicist, Tom Estey, soon. The compilation features Chago G and also a song with Dorian P Williams (formerly with The Gap Band. More writing; more performing. Plowing through and creating original, electric guitar songs with Romain Duchein as the exo skeleton. We just want to touch everyone we can (find that “touching me, touching you” vibe from Neil Diamond.
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Rebecca DGD: Thank you to our drummer on this song; John Bennetts former member of the Eurogliders; he adds some intense drive. We intend to and will keep making songs; grinding our way through US radio and cities; barking up any Burton tree we can. Cuz, I’m an American woman who missed the last sermon. Knock, Knock, Knocking on Cummings’ door in “Appreciation.”
