Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1957: Forgotten Lives One-Shot Review: One of a Kind

Hellboy and Bruttenholm have been on many assignments together. There have been assignments that even involve spirits. Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson team up once again to create a one-shot about these two teaming up called “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1957: Forgotten Lives” with artists Stephen Green and Dave Stewart.

Hellboy and Bruttenholm are in New York City investigating a haunting at the potter’s field on Hart Island. Here, Hellboy decides to help put the restless spirit to rest once and for all. Hart Island is a real island near The Bronx, New York and it is considered haunted due to the high number of people buried there. All unclaimed by any relatives. This is the perfect spot for any kind of story about a haunting. The comic is a bit unorthodox when it comes to “Hellboy” stories since there are no fight scenes. Yes, a “Hellboy” one-shot with zero action in it. That doesn’t make it any less impactful or entertaining. In fact, Mignola and Roberson decided to go the philosophical route for this story.

Some people may not like this approach, but once you see the people mentioned in the comic and who the restless spirit is it will blow many readers away. Snotty literary scholars would even enjoy it.   The artwork for these comics keep improving. It seems like whatever art these “Hellboy” artists have done they look at it and go, “I can do much better than this.” The character designs are top notch, the colors are vibrant and overall it looks like you are watching an animated movie in ultra-HD. The only true downside is the overall look of Hart Island. Hart Island is massive and this comic makes it look tiny.

“Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1957: Forgotten Lives” may not have any action scenes in it, but it more than makes up for it with emotion that any “Hellboy” fan will feel. With top quality artwork, this comic does a fine job of not only telling an story but it hopefully will lead to a longer story that may blow the minds of fans.
