Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Thibkbendy, who discusses their creative process on their new EP, The Essence of Time.
Review Fix: What songs you love make up the DNA of The Essence of Time?
Thinkbendy: All of them, actually, but these five; Why This Way, One Day, Low Down, Time Is Of The Essence, and Pot Of Gold Blues have a basis from a personal perspective, or moment in time, whereas, A Man A Plan A Canal Panama is more of an artistic representation of a particular era in time. The title track however, Time Is Of The Essence, really focuses on the DNA of the record.
Review Fix: Is it a difficult song for you to sing?
Thinkbendy: Not especially, but we did do some multi-layering in the chorus section of the song which, although challenging, resulted in an ‘in and out’ vocal staggering, against the steady hits of the rhythm section to produce the eerie, yet steady ticks of a “clock”. Listen for it from around 3:09 – 3:40.
Review Fix: What inspired the cover?
Thinkbendy: The cover of The Essence Of Time is artwork that was created by Adam’s brother during their high school years. Adam loved it so much that he held on to the original, and being inspired by its quirkiness, decided to use it for his thinkbendy project. You can also find the “sail-car” as it were, within the artwork of thinkbendy’s first release, CHANGE. Look for it to be used again, in some form, in the artwork of our next release.
Review Fix: What line from the song do you feel does the best job of selling it to a potential listener?
Thinkbendy: The opening line, “How much can we take before we crack and break?”, sets up the listener for an urging to take control of what we can, and to do so with vigilance.
Review Fix: How does this song make you better than you were before it existed?
Thinkbendy: This song utilizes some interesting structural song techniques starting from the single-instrument introduction, to the hazy groove-locked verses, leading to a chromatic-orientated ascending bridge, and culminating into the multi-voiced “clock” at the mid-section of the tune. Out of that, we hear the stated chorus theme, which is used as a mechanism for transition both in and out of the guitar solo before ending with the multi-layered finale of the chorus. In essence, over time, (no pun intended), this song rises from minimal to maximum level in a very creative way.
Review Fix: If you had to pick another singer to perform it, who would it be and why?
Thinkbendy: As of now, we do not have anyone in mind, not to say that we would be opposed to another artist wanting to pick it up, upon approval, of course. If you are out there, let us know.
Review Fix: What do you want someone to take away from this track? What’s the real lesson learned here?
Age makes time move faster, and while we can’t change that, we can adjust ourselves to see this fact as an advantage.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Thinkbendy: Thinkbendy is currently recording the third installment of our multi-vision project. All we can tell you, (without giving too much away), is that it is a three part compositional based work, that will mix the thinkbendy “progressive-jam-rock-alternative” sound with something special.
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Thinkbendy: Yes. As we move to the next phase of thinkbendy, we’d like to take a moment and thank everyone on our team who has worked on, or is currently working on this project. – you know who you are! And anyone out there who might have an interest in genuine compositional, progressive, jam, or alternative music within the larger scope of the rock genre, give thinkbendy a ear.
