Review Fix: What inspired this comic?
Tony Corazza: What inspired this comic was my childhood, it is my belief that during the time I was young, around the early 1990s, we had some of the best Cartoons/Movies. We had Courage the Cowardly Dog, TMNT, Pokemon, Animaniacs but what always stood out to me was the Superhero Cartoons and Shows. Such as Batman “The Animated Series”, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, The Spiderman 90’s show on Fox and I always recalled and remembered those Shows for its superb storytelling and character development and I look at the comics today from DC and Marvel and it doesn’t have the same feeling that it did when we were kids. I felt in a way many comics have lost their way as of late with repetitive storytelling or catering to what they feel is hip at the moment.
I also love my home on Staten Island, I love the quaint little suburban feeling, the quietness, local business, fresh air and the fact that everyone knows everyone. I feel Staten Island has been done a serious disservice in the past from Staten Island based movies and I haven’t really seen appearances of Staten Island in Comic book Adaptations. I want people to know Staten Island is not a dump, it’s someplace you can raise a family, enjoy time spent with the community and grow old in.
I would say movies like Homeward Bound, The Adventures Of Milo & Otis and Fluke inspired the Misadventures of Beautiful Bella & Marvelous Max series in my book. I always wondered what my dogs would say if they could talk, what their personalities would be like and what they would do if they had powers. It’s my personal dedication to them as they both are unfourantly no longer here. They were both lovely companions.
Review Fix: What did it take for this to be realized? What was the journey like?
Corazza: The journey has been a trying one. Alot of the things you learn from going into business for yourself is from trial and error. What works, what doesn’t and what we can do better next time. But like I said Superhero shows, comics, movies have also been a big part of my childhood.
I used to do Professional Wrestling for a little bit as a wrestler/promoter in the indy wrestling circuit as well as backyard when I was younger. For a long time I played a heel “The King Of The World” Tony Dangerous and me and and a promoter of a local indy company spoke and he’s like uh Tony we were thinking about turning you into a babyface and well it would be very difficult to do that as the self proclaimed “King Of The World” and he looked to me and he looked at my interests and he suggested well what about a Superhero and that’s the day the Superhero version of Tony Dangerous was really born.
But what struck my mind is how do I want this character to be portrayed, what is its marketability and what made him change his outlook. So that’s what I feel really brought this story to fruition, a inward look at what made me decided to go from a Selfish, Narcissistic, Arrogant little weasel heel to a All American Staten Island boy, who always tries to help people even if he gets ripped from his boss. I also took my real life experiences from working at the N.Y.P.D. how the Commands, Roll Call is run as well as terms used within the Department and make people more aware how the Department is really run away from the eyes of the public in a positive sense.
Review Fix: What makes this comic special?
Corazza: I feel what makes this comic special is the fact that it really shows what life in Staten Island A.K.A. Statenopolis is like from the landmarks, to the rich history, to our values and beliefs. I also feel it’s special because of the labor of love that me and Art Bernal have put into this series. It has truly been a Passion project for us, me with my love for Superheros and Film and Art with his love for old movies and cinematography. We were also able to bounce ideas off of each other which I feel was especially insightful. Like I would have point A and C planned out for an angle and Art would come in with Point B and help put everything together and vice versa. I also like the references and heartfelt messages that me and Art have incorporated in this book.
Review Fix: Who do you think will dig it the most?
Corazza: What I feel makes this comic most special is there is something for everyone in these books. You Love the Golden Age of Superheroes, you have Tony Dangerous, You love Dogs and pets, you have “The Misadventures of Beautiful Bella and Marvelous Max” and if you like old fashioned Batman comics or Daredevil then I feel Dark Guardian will be more your speed. We also have some horror elements that are going to be featured in Issue 5, 6 but I don’t want to spoil too much.
Review Fix: What are your goals for it?
Corazza: My goals are to get the Comic out there more publically and to be available in as many stores and mediums as possible. As much as I respect and admire DC and Marvel for what they have contributed to Movies. Cartoons and Comics I feel we should always have as many options available to us as possible.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Corazza: Good question, Me and Art Bernal have been work tirelessly to finish Issue 4 for all the fans. So far illustration wise, it should be about half done and should be Available around Winter 2022. After that I should be working on Adventures of “The Lightning Quick” Tammie Dangerous which is a what if Comic series/One Shot (I haven’t decided yet). I don’t want to say too much because I don’t believe in spoilers but the series focuses on what if Tony’s Sister Tammie got superpowers instead of Tony.
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Corazza: I wanted to personally thank Patrick Hickey Jr and the rest of the Legacy Comix team for this amazing opportunity and to please look for alot of amazing stuff from the Legacy Comix team as well as High Voltage Comics in the near and upcoming future.
