Alex Blizzy: A Step Behind Review: Enjoyable

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Alex Blizzy’s A Step Behind is your standard guitar-strummin’, southern-twangin’, country rock affair. If you enjoy music about small towns, pickup trucks, and country girls with big-city dreams, A Step Behind is probably for you.

The title track opens the album by welcoming listeners with a comfortable strummed guitar and Blizzy’s raspy southern vocals. It sets expectations for the rest of the album perfectly. It’s a fun, listenable track that won’t wow your average country fan. But it certainly wouldn’t feel out of place playing on a jukebox in a southern dive bar.

No self-respecting country album would be complete without a heartbreak song. And that’s where “Wrong End of Goodbye” comes in. Blizzy sings about broken promises, lies, and the dramatic imagery of pouring rain backed by thunder and lightning during a breakup. It’s a moody slow jam that highlights Blizzy’s melancholic drawl.

“These Footsteps” picks up where “Wrong End of Goodbye” left off with more sorrowful guitar and longing rock organ. Blizzy recounts bitter memories of days past, from the childhood trauma of his parents arguing to the loss of friendship as he grew older. It’s a touching, honest track that’s thematically relatable and a highlight of the album.

Finally, “Never Felt Better” closes out the LP with another slow jam with that tried-and-true country sound. It perfectly encapsulates how Blizzy never breaks the mold and pushes no envelopes. He’s sad he didn’t get the girl, and life can be rough sometimes. But, despite all of this mortal coil’s trials and tribulations, somehow, he’s never felt better.

A Step Behind is a heartfelt country rock journey that fans of the genre can absolutely enjoy. So if you like Garth Brooks, Blake Shelton, and Luke Combs, Alex Blizzy’s latest offering is an extremely listenable experience to give a try.
