Gem FM – Con Fusion Album Review: A Spacey Dance-Fueled Ride

Music has the power to make you move. Whether you want to work out, dance, or just plain run, there’s almost always a suitable track that can set the mood for any activity you’d like to engage in. For Gem FM, this activity seems to be throwing an interstellar dance party in his latest release, “Con Fusion.” The album oozes both cinematic and dance club vibes using some stellar sci-fi and spacey sounds to bring it all together, especially when you hear tracks such as “Hit The Door”.

“Hit The Door” has a groovy bassline that instantly takes over the track and gets you moving. From the top, you’ll find yourself getting lost in the beat of the drums and bass as the rest of the instrumentals come onto the scene. The track is an absolute musical tour-de-force with a bouncy, upbeat attitude throughout that never loses its dance-able vibe. If you aren’t lost in the groovy drums and bass, the synths and brass will sweep you off your feet, especially with the cheeky robotic vocals that only add to the playful nature of the track. “Hit The Door” is the first big punch of “Con Fusion” that shows its power with a magnetic groove and totally fun atmosphere.

“Diggy Diggy Boop Boop” is another stand-out track. The heavy drums with the dark, spacey synths create a very cinematic sci-fi atmosphere. The spacey motifs are instantly recognizable, with the quick climbing synth sounds being oddly hypnotic as they travel up our head through your ears. The percussion jams hard, with the drums giving the track a pulse that keeps your ears glued to the track while the marimba softens out the harsher edges left by the imposing drums and synths. These elements combine to create a sonic atmosphere that feels both foreboding and inviting by creating an industrial-style dance beat that is easy to get lost in. “Diggy Diggy Boop Boop” is a track that nails the spacey, sci-fi aesthetic in a musical form.

The intro of “RUda1” instantly grabs your attention before hitting you with the impressive heavy electro synths that light up the track. The synths create an overwhelming feeling of contrast with the overpowering bass synths playing with the lighter keys while the drums march on. This theme creates some incredible moments that give the track a larger-than-life sound, with musical layers whose depth is only truly discovered on repeat listens. The layers of subtle drums, keyboards and other sonic trappings work together to give the synth track its feeling of impressive, dominating power. With the signature robotic voice giving you some playful vocals to latch onto, “RUda1” is a track that will leave its impression on you from its first moments alone.

“Bake The Cake” is a groovy track with a very different personality from the rest. The guitar licks that start the track are full of life and make you perk up when you hear them. As the drums and bass slowly move in behind the alluring chords, they only aid in melting you into the music. The percussion is full of life, with lively drums and bass that will get you up out of your seat. The brass reinforces this, with some great grooves that give the track both depth and a sense of rising anticipation. The lyrics are simple, but catchy and add to the energetic atmosphere of the track. It makes “Bake The Cake” a track you’ll want to play over and over again, especially if you’re already moving.

“Con Fusion” is a fun listen with some memorable tracks that easily get stuck in your head after just one listen. Tracks such as “Double Dribble,” “Bake The Cake” and “RUda1” are fun to listen to and fit nicely into the overall cinematic stylings that album is reaching for. There isn’t a track on here you can’t dance to, and while some such as “Big Daddy’s Gonna Come Home Today” feel jarring to listen to, they are rare occurrences that don’t detract from the rest of the charm of the album. If you’re looking for something spacey to move to, “Con Fusion” is just what you’re looking for.
