Second Coming: Trinity Review: Has Promise

The idea of using Jesus as a character in a non-religious story has been done before with varying degrees of success. One of the most recent examples is “Second Coming: Trinity” by Mark Russel and artists Richard Pace, Leonard Kirk and Andy Troy.

Superhero Sunstar is called to testify in the case against supervillain Cranius. During this time, we get flashbacks of Sunstar and Cranius’s 20-year high school reunion. Here, we delve a little bit into the backstory of these two characters and what caused them to appear in court today. It is a decent story that has some fun with the hero and villain backstory. Nothing too great or terrible. The art is also OK with little that stands out.

Jesus as a character is just there to give some advice to Sunstar on what to do in the case and babysit Sunstar’s baby. That’s all he does in the story.

The first of two short stories is “Extra Credit 3: The Groundskeeper” by Tyrone Finch. Bryce destroyed a bed of rhododendrons while skateboarding on school grounds, causing the giant groundskeeper Mr. Conrad to make Bryce pour a weird goo on them, causing the flowers to come back to life along with something else. It’s a fun story with elements any elementary school kid would love. It reads like a “Goosebumps” short.

The other short story is “Ingredients of Matter” by Darrick Patrick. This story tells of how a man who every time he sneezes a snake comes out of his ear. It all starts when, while traveling to the woods and stopping to pump gas, he meets a group of people who spray something into his mouth and tell him to follow. It reads like a weird fever dream that ends with obtaining a weird power.

“Second Coming: Trinity” has a nice idea but the main story can’t get above a decent. The short stories in this collection are a bit more entertaining and are worth more of your time.
