Murky World Review: Foul Mouths and Violent Tendancies

By Rocco Sansone

Richard Corben is the definition of a comic book writer who is willing to take risks that lead to some success which includes his most famous work “Den.” One of the most recent works he created is “Murky World”  which is finally collected by Dark Horse.

Mag the Hag has given barbarian warrior Tugat a quest that goes off the rails. Now Tugat must deal with slavers, an evil empire, giants and women who like to backstab him. On top of that, Mag the Hag is constantly trying to get it on with Tugat.

This comic perfectly encapsulates Corben’s time writing “Den” for “Heavy Metal Magazine.” The world is a vast barren wasteland, there are unspeakable monsters crawling around, an Ancient Romanesque battle arena and everyone is wearing nothing but a sheet. Not to mention women with macromastia-sized breasts who constantly appear naked. Sadly, that also means that the story is below average, reading like it was written by a horny teenager. Think “Eye of Argon” and you have this comic. All the characters act like they’re teenagers with foul mouths and violent tendencies. True, “Heavy Metal Magazine” was never known for its great writing, but there is a line that needs to be drawn between entertaining and sixth-grade creative writing homework.

The artwork is Corben’s usual fare. Humans who have weird proportions and facial expressions to the point where they are ugly as sin. As mentioned before, the women have massive macromastia-sized breasts. The problem is the women are so ugly and one has super muscular man-like arms that it’s impossible to get aroused by them. The backgrounds are mostly dark, monotone colors that match the super ugly look of the characters.

“Murky World” is an ugly comic with ugly characters, ugly backgrounds and a story that is also ugly. It reads and looks like a teenager’s dream comic with low-grade writing and women who are just giant breasts and ugly faces.
