Marc E – Before The Thought Single Review: A Dark Dance Beat

When one thinks of dance music normally the mind goes to the upbeat, high BPM tracks that get your body moving. A DJ always wants to see the dance floor go crazy. Marc E, however, offers the other side of the coin with “Before The Thought.” This dark groove with an earth-shaking bass knows exactly what it is and comes out of the gate wanting to sweep you away.

The deep, descending synths instantly instill a feeling of mystery and darkness. The deep waviness forms the sinister beat, giving the synths that squirm about its pulse an otherworldly feel. The familiar dance motifs are bleak and mind-bending to listen to when they’re twisted and distorted in such a way. Warped wubs, static-laced effects and the ever-descending bass synths tie the track together. It all adds to the dark and sludgy aesthetic perfectly, with graceful piano keys giving the dark foundation a sense of controlled forward momentum. It also softens the oppressive power of the hell-bound bass.

The creeping feeling that lies under the disorienting waves that move about the bleak pulse the deep bassy synths is undeniable, which inspires feelings of a paranoia that’s just light enough to be immersive and not intrusive. It creates a surreal and psychedelic atmosphere that’s also sure to make the ground shake when it’s played through a good sound system or top-tier headphones. The tracks’ slow tempo building ups the tension that constantly pushes in but also leans more into the psychedelic and ethereal side towards the second half. The unrelenting deep pulse of the descending synths becomes counterbalanced with more starry synths and a quicker piano tempo, giving the track feel like it’s ascending slowly from a sludgy sea of heavy darkness. It makes the track feel dynamic and almost makes repeat listens play till the end.

Marc-E’s “Before The Thought” lures the listener in with an atmosphere of crushing darkness and mystery before lifting them into space. The oppressive bass hits you right from the start which could seem overwhelming, especially with its unrelenting nature in this track. The starry, high-pitched synths and graceful pianos give the track an ethereal quality that dominates the second half of the track as it moves from an oppressive sludginess to an ascendent, psychedelic vibe. It all adds up to make “Before The Thought” a dynamic listening experience that thrives off showing the power of a good sound system or a nice pair of headphones.
