Review Fix Exclusive: Erin Mathewson Talks Paper Engineered Pop-ups and Maker Faire Coney Island

Review Fix chats with Erin Mathewson, who discusses her paper-engineered Pop-Ups and involvement with this year’s Maker Faire Coney Island.

Review Fix: What do you make?

Erin Mathewson: Paper Engineered Pop-ups – often Coney Island or Sideshow Themed.

As well as Printmaking, Illustrations, Jewelry and many other things.

My Etsy shop name is called “Erin’s Etceteras” because I make so many different things so it’s etc, etc, etc.

Recently I have been focused on making my illustrations move and pop with paper engineering.

Review Fix: Why do you make it?

Mathewson: I love figuring out new ways to make my illustrations POP!

It’s a constant learning process and fun figuring out the different paper engineering techniques and mechanisms to create a specific movement or structure.

Coney Island is my favorite place and is an endless supply of inspiration.

Review Fix: What are your goals with it?

Mathewson: I’m always trying to learn more techniques and push myself to create more interesting pieces.

I hope this workshop shows people they really can create something truly unique and special with just a few cuts and folds. Even simple folds can create a big impact and really make something pop.

Review Fix: What do you plan on doing at this year’s Maker Faire?

Mathewson: I will be demonstrating some of the basic principles of Pop-up paper engineering with some examples of various simple V-folds. There will be three Coney Island-themed templates that people can choose from to assemble their own pop-up as well as blank cardstock and drawing materials if people choose to create their own pop-up design.

Review Fix: Where can people find out more?

Mathewson: My website is erinmathewson.com and my Instagram is @erinsetceteras

October is Popuptober on Instagram so I’ll be posting lots of pop-ups this month and following Popuptober is a great way to learn more about popups by seeing what people create every day.

All skill levels can participate.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Mathewson: I hope to continue to teach more workshops as well as exhibit my work. You can also find me vending in Coney usually at the Coney Island Brewery or Coney Island USA.
