Review Fix chats with artist Jack P. Du about his art and involvement in this year’s Maker Faire Coney Island.
Review Fix: What do you make?

I am an artist, researcher, and teacher interested in creating images, videos, and interactive experiences with code. I also develop custom software and hardware tools for my artistic practice when they do not exist. For instance, I built Minus E (https://jackbdu.com/works/minus-e/), an award-winning robotic system that creates large-scale representational drawings with scribbles, and Mandarinizer (https://jackbdu.com/works/mandarinizer/), an experimental camera app and an interactive installation that captures pictures in a pixel-art format consisting of Mandarin Chinese characters. My most recent research involves the daily publications of coding experiments (https://jackbdu.com/works/daily-sketches/) on Instagram (http://instagram.com/jackbdu/), through which I explore the novel possibilities of code as a creative medium.

Review Fix: Why do you make it?
Jack B Du: I consider my daily experiments as a form of journaling, a lifestyle, and a way to engage in conversation with the public. All of my experiments started with a simple idea: a circle, a blob, or even a scribble. I would then develop upon these simple ideas by making incremental changes over time, altering colors, number of repetitions, sizes, rotations, etc. These small changes often led to surprising results that I would otherwise have not achieved, which motivated me to keep experimenting.
Review Fix: What are your goals with it?
Jack B. Du: This practice helps me to stay creative on a daily basis. I also hope that my work can inspire more creativity in the realm of art, design, and education.
Review Fix: What do you plan on doing at this year’s Maker Faire?
Jack B. Du: At this year’s Maker Faire, I will be sharing my most recent creative coding experiments and I will also be hosting a beginner-friendly creative coding workshop. I hope my presentation and workshop will empower even more people with the endless creative possibilities that coding brings.
Review Fix: Where can people find out more?
Jack B. Du: You can read more about my creative coding experiments on my website (https://jackbdu.com/works/daily-sketches/) or follow me on instagram (http://instagram.com/jackbdu/) to see my new experiment posted every day.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Jack B. Du: I enjoy these experiments and will keep making and posting every day. In addition, I hope to start posting more creative coding tutorials on my YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmz0FTW_bFitKZpmJTHSOLg).
