Review Fix chats with Mark Ogata, who discusses his Soccer robot kit, ZIRCON and presenting at this year’s Coney Island Maker Faire.
Review Fix: What do you make?
Mark Ogata: A soccer robot kit, to build and program your own soccer robot, based on Teensy (Arduino) technology.
Review Fix: Why do you make it?
Ogata: Programming a robot to push a ball in the opponent’s goal, and not the own goal, is an epic challenge that excited middle and high school students. It is a great way to learn real robotics, hardware and software, the essence of “making” cool things.
Review Fix: What are your goals with it?
Ogata: Our students compete in the annual RoboCupJunior tournament every May in New York. Some have qualified for the world cup, and taken second place behind Japan, but all have had fun and learned a lot.
Review Fix: What do you plan on doing at this year’s Maker Faire?
Ogata: We will demonstrate and sell autonomous soccer robot kits for middle and high school students, so they can join us for RoboCup. Young makers will be able to try their hand at programming soccer robot at our stand.
Review Fix: Where can people find out more?
Ogata: www.robomov.net or https://soccer-robotics.github.io/psr/
Review Fix: What’s next?
Ogata: We have free Saturday workshops, come and join! The RoboCupJunior competition will be in May in New York, so start building your robot NOW!
