Creepshow Holiday Special Review: Mission Accomplished

Christmas is a time when there’s supposed to be love, cheer and joy to the world. One of the last things people associate with Christmas is horror. That doesn’t stop people from writing horror stories that take place during Christmas, and the comic book anthology “Creepshow” is more than willing to scratch that Christmas horror itch with its Holiday Special featuring two stories.

“Christmas Man” by Daniel Kraus with artist Jonathan Wayshak sees Esme being harassed by her family because they want to watch sports and she wants to watch “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” One of them tells her the story about the Christmas Man to scare her because Esme still believes in Santa Claus. In classic “Creepshow” fashion the ending is as gory and messed up as one can expect. Wayshak does an excellent job of showing how horrible and ugly Eme’s family is. Introducing the Christmas Man through a child’s crayon drawings is perfect since Esme is being teased that she is still a baby.

“Package Thieves” by James Asmus with artist Letizia Cadonici has porch pirates Joy and Holly finding an eye in one of the packages they stole. The packages with organs in them continue, creeping out Holly. It’s a story about what almost everyone wants to happen with porch pirates during the holidays and it’s as gruesome as only “Creepshow” can do. You’re not meant to like these characters since almost everyone nowadays has been a victim of porch pirates and wants to see them get their comeuppance. Cadonici’s art may be the best and the higher quality of the two stories, but it still manages to be as scary and gory as expected from “Creepshow.”

“Creepshow Holiday Special” has all the gore and messed up stories fans expect from ‘Creepshow.” The stories and quick and to the point and the art, though not the highest quality, still manages to be creepy and gory.
